I've had good experience with Dell laptop hardware. The service side of things sucks *** however. I've got two Dell laptops (i8600 and i9200) and they have been problem free with the exception of a bad video card after 3 years on the i8600. I'd still recommend Dell laptops, the value is tough to beat. Just hope that you don't have to deal with tech support on anything more than a cookie cutter type problem.

The best deal I've found was the day after Thanksgiving at Best Buy (or other places like Circuit City). But I'll never do that again. My time is worth more than waiting inline for that long.
Though the Toshiba laptop I'm typing this on was $900 and ended up being $400 after rebate.

I bought a used IBM Thinkpad P3: 500mhz, 160mb ram, 10gb harddrive. Got it on craigslist and picked it up locally for $100 cash. Works flawlessly and only gripes are its slow booting time and the battery life 1.5hr with screen on. Works just fine for tuning which is its sole purpose right now so I am happy.
You can pickup the compaq/HP vz line of notebooks for like 400-500 w/ a turion..should last you for quite awhile
Over kill: Dell E1505 dual core ~ 600
or craigslist and find some P4age for like 300

http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4530647 <- Just went out of stock. Dammit.
Fry's has some rocking deals. The girl just got a 14" Widescreen Compaq at under $500 3 months ago.

I like the Thinkpad: http://dealnews.com/deals/Refurbishe...ed/136786.html
The thinkpads have always put up with a lot of abuse. I particularly like the mouse eraser unit when tuning since it's grease resistant.
