I am building a custom gun and three weeks after painting the stock it still has not dried. I can pick it up and put fingerprints in it. The stock was painted with a couple of coats of black, then I taped off some tiger stripes and painted over the tape with red, then removed the tape and painted several coats of clear over that. All the paint was rattle can gloss. I know the paint and gloss is pretty thick and was painted in some pretty humid weather but I brought it in the house (air conditioning) for a week or so and figured that would help. What would you do to get the paint to dry or put a hard protective coat or something on it. I was going to let it bake in the sun for a few days but the rain has been pretty bad here lately. Any ideas?

If you did not let the under coats dry throughly, they are still soft trying to lose solvents. With top coats, they have nowhere to go. It will take a very long time for it to harden up. I'm guessing about 6-8 weeks time.

Sounds way too humid. Try an oven on it's lowest setting? Or is it too long?

is that a plastic stock that you sprayed rattle-can paint onto?

Did you let each color dry completely before spraying the next color?

Are the different paints all based on the same solvent?

Hang it in a room that has a dehumidifier in it.

it's possible the clear you added doesn't jive with the layer of paint below and it'll never cure.

No. Enamel needs humidity to cure properly. It's not just drying, it's curing.

Thanks guys. I'll hang it up and screw with it again in a couple of months.

In other news, look what I just picked up (two separate purchases of slightly used equipment - $520 total). I've used the bandsaw to build a 55gal fishtank stand but have yet to turn on the lathe.

Cool beans. I have the same bandsaw, and a similar lathe (mine is the standard 7x12) as well as a minimill. It's fun to make stuff.

I suddenly want frosted flakes for some reason.

Is that the harbor freight model bandsaw? I had that one and it worked very well for a home hobby type, but failed quickly when I brought it up to the shop. It just isn't made for a lot of use. I got a JET after that and haven't had a issue.

Black bull barrel, black trigger & guard, black butt pad, black scope, black bipod. It will tone down the red quite a bit. I wanted something completely unique (it actually represents a 1983 Porsche 911 - long story). It is all about new projects. I've never striped anything before so I wanted to give it a shot on that ratty looking beat to hell extra stock I had laying around. If it doesn't look good when I'm finished I'll strip the paint off and stain it.


It is the Northern Tool model bandsaw (which is the same thing as the HF version - just $30 more or whatever). There are people who use the hell out of it after doing a few "mods". I opened the gearbox and found there was only a tablespoon full of a tar like substance for lubrication. Now it is full of synthetic gear oil and the life has been extended 10 fold...

UPDATE:

I think you were right. I don't understand the concept of paint not jiving but I guess it didn't. It had been over two months since I painted it and figured it was time to mess with it again. I did a little work on the stock (new mounting stuff for the barrel) last week and laid the stock on a towel. I just picked it up after 4 days and the stock now has towel dents all over it. So, I'm probably going to wrap it in a towel, dent it all over, and leave it at that.
