XBOX360 or PS3
I'm not a huge gamer, but now that I'm getting close to having my basement "theater" done I have the urge for a driving sim on a 100" screen. The projector is a Panasonic PT-AE3000, so it'll handle anything a console can throw at it.
I already have a blue-ray player, and don't care to use the console for anything other than gaming. Opinions on what to get? Do both use HDMI for connectivity? I'm doing more research than asking here, but I find some of you mt.net people have decent opinions too. Basically I want it for driving sims and FPS games. |
XBOX 360 Elite.
Better variety of games, better online, better overall system. Only thing is the xbox tends to have issues more than the PS3. But once you have a good one, your good to go. Make sure if you get an xbox you read up on the differences between the power bricks and the DVD drives. I have the newest elite (got it off amazon) and have no problems with it so far. However over the years I have had 4 regular 360's I had to either sell or send back for repair, and my last elite shit the bed. That's the biggest issue with them, other than that, its the better system. IMO that is. :bigtu: |
If you enjoy playing online (or think you might) with other folks, then XBOX. There's just so many folk out there, especially the FPS/Halo type of games. And usually you can get sucked into a game or two per year, costing about $120 in games, unless you get bored easily and move on.
|
Get a 360 Arcade since it uses the Jasper chipset, and doesn't seem to have the red ring issue that my other 2 360's had over a 6 month period, and is only $199, plus buy a used HDD for another $40. I used to be a Playstation fanboy, and did own a PS3 for a long time, but after I played the few games I purchased the console for, mostly being Metal Gear Solid 4, I had no use for it. 360 has the better online gaming and probably a better choice of games overall for most people, though I think that the PS3 graphics are superior. I have yet to see a 360 game compare to some of the PS3 exclusive games. With the PS3 being so cheap now, its really hard for me to justify one way or the other. When it was still $399 when I bought one, I would have said 360 for sure, but now the 360 and PS3 aren't priced too far apart. I think for racing sims, GT5 will probably beat Forza 3, though I am plenty happy with Forza 3 so far. PS3 also has some good shooters, but the 360 also has good shooters that are probably more popular. Just look over the game choices before you make your decision. PLUS, another big thing is that Sony has Blu-Ray, 360 does not. That was a deciding factor for me, though I never even used it. So really for the money, I think the PS3 is actually the better value, but 360 probably has more games.
|
Xbox all the way. I had mine for 4 years now with no issues
|
Jay, I don't know your age but; fwiw, I bought a PS3 for my sons because it gave me a chance to also use it as a blue ray dvd player.
My oldest son (married and living on his own) bought a 360 and loves it. Sorry I just saw you don't want it for anything to do with blueray (fire away) :bowrofl: |
You can use HDMI on both consoles. I vote 360 for the reasons listed above. I love mine, when I get to play it that is.
|
I was expecting to be convinced that the XBOX360 was the way to go. But the more I look into it and decide what is important and what isn't my decision isn't so clear.
The two big things that don't matter to me are: - Blue-Ray - Online play As stated previously I already have a blue-ray solution for the HT. Online play, I can't handle having my ass handed to me by 6 year old kids all day long. I did the online thing with the PC years ago, it just isn't for me. My biggest concern about the xbox is reliability. PS3 seems to be solid. I have trouble investing in a console that very will likely take a shit and be useless. I'm an IT guy, and my opinion of MS is not that great. I also like that upgrading the HD in the PS3 is trivial, don't know about the xbox. As for games, I've been out of the gaming market for so long I don't even have a clue what is hot. I like killing and driving. So the catalog of games on each console is difficult for me to have an opinion on. The GT series of games have been a favorite of mine in the past, haven't play the Forza series. I think the last driving sim I played on an xbox was Project Gotham Racing. With GT5 looking to come out soon, that might be enough to make my decision. Thanks for the input, keep it coming! |

The other thing I have to consider is my equipment rack will be behind my seating position. I know the PS3 uses bluetooth so that won't be an issue. What does the xbox use? |
PS3 I mean only if your an adult and have had sex.

both consoles have been redesigned for reliability and the new ps3 slim is supposedly much quieter and cooler than its predecessor.
that said, it's really about the games you like. |

Xbox controllers are also radio, so that's not a problem. IMO, the biggest reason to get a PS3 is the on-board blu-ray.
As far as audio goes, that depends on the rest of our equipment. Assuming you have a hdmi-capable a/v receiver, you'll run hdmi from your source devices (b-r, gaming system, and sat box) to your receiver, and then hdmi from receiver to projector. You will not need to run any separate audio cables.* *In 99.99% of circumstances |
buy both

PS3 all the way.
I would never pay money for a piece of shit FagBox 360 ever. I've had 3 friends who have had failures and some have gone through as many as 3 FagBox 360s. Even my next door neighbor(who rents his house as a vacation home) just switched to a PS3 becuase the FagBox he had decided to shit out on some renters while they were staying there. The online play for the PS3 is actually really, really good despite what some losers say. Games are better and everything in general is just BETTER. Also the internet browser is great for turning your t.v. into a giant porno box :jerkit: |
xbox rules I believe it's more of a younger geared console not like a Wii but not as "serious" as the PS3 it's right in the middle :)

Also the internet browser is great for turning your t.v. into a giant porno box :jerkit: I've gone through 6!!! And I still keep coming back. XBOX has been good as far as warranteeing their 360s (for me). They've extended my Live! subscription each time I'm down, apologize profusely (thanks Apu at the Mumbai call center!), and only gave a little push back about warranteeing it once. All-in-all, customer service was top-notch. Yeah, it sucks being down. However, the game play online is fun as heck, even if there are a bunch of annoying people all over the world. I equate the PS3 to the Apple fanbois: you rarely hear complaints, the stuff is pretty solid (much better than the 360), better technology, etc. HOWEVER, everyone else is using XBOX Live!.....so, I'll put up with the inferior, buggier, funner stuff. |
My XBOX 360 is about two years old. It's the "arcade" version, and I'm still running w/o a hard drive. No problems at all.
Best feature is seamless integration with windows media player. I'm not even using Windows Media Center edition, just plain ole XP. I download media to the PC, and it just magically shows up on the XBOX. |
XBox1 (not a 360). Hack it and use it as a media center. Free online game play and free games. Spend $100 total for the best damn entertainment/media system in the world. No, you can't play the latest games on it but who cares. EVERY game is old after a month or two.
I had 4 XBox1's, sold them and bought 4 360's. Couldn't take it and bought another XBox1 for all the media stuff. Haven't used it lately but you just can't beat all that it can do. Hacking it is relatively easy. |

xbox 360 ftmfw. Mainly for the online play, amount of new and old games, its cheaper than ps3, and pc integration.
|
just get a monster PC rig with a nice wireless keyboard and mouse. We all know PC gaming is far superior. =P

Its more fun even if you spend more money doing it and stuff keeps breaking down...I say go for the 360. Especially if you're going for simulators and first person shooters. 360 has much better of both of those. Believe you me, if you like sims and FPS, you will eventually like online play and get into xbox live. I promise

yeah online play is one big bonus of the xbox, but like I said cost is another benefit. You can get games for super cheap on ebay, buy like a lot of 20 games for 100 bucks.

i've had my ps3 3 years now and love it had one fry but returned it through the 2 year coverage i had and have had no problems what so ever now love it ps3 all the way

PS3 + 10 games = $900 XBox1 + 500 games + free online multiplayer + 1000's of internet radio stations + youtube over the xbox + incredible multimedia player = $100 Yeah, that is retarded. What the hell was I thinking??? |

Thats fine for you, but suggesting to the OP that he ignore the new consoles and go with an old outdated console because its cheaper is stupid. Why buy a game when it will be old in a few months...
You also proved my point when you said all the games that are out now suck. The age of a game has nothing to do with how fun it is to play. I'll put the XBox1 and the FPS "Black" against any game that has come out for the PS3. The ability to load the XBox1 console's HD full of kick ass games and never have to touch another game DVD (instead loading the game at much faster speed straight off the HD) is an added bonus. I can throw my XBox1 loaded to the gills with 1000 games, movies, MP3s, emulators, etc in a backpack. Try that with a PS3. |

I never said go with it because it was cheaper. I said (or implied - not sure how you missed that) go with it because it is cheaper and does 10 times as much as a PS3. The XBox1 is by far the superior console in every respect except one - no "new" games. When you consider that all new games are old the day you open them up the choice is clear. You do realize that the PS3 was released THREE YEARS AGO don't you? Like you said "Why spend money on an old outdated console..."

Of course you can use a PS2 controller. What do you think it is, something proprietary like a shit ass PS3? Amazon.com: Playstation 2 to Xbox Controller Converter: Video Games http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.jpg |
I'd rather not have a frankenstein console though. ANYWAY, this thread is going a bit off topic. Your argument sucks and is invalid, and this thread is between PS3 and 360.

Your comparing personal preference (I'd rather not have a Frankenstien console) whereas he's comparing actual use-ability. |
I have already said, great, it plays old games, I enjoy a lot of older classics. But I doubt this thread was made so the OP could learn more about the outdated Xbox to go along with his newly finished home theater. Again, someone tell me outside of game selection/already having a massive library of games, what does it have that puts it heads above current consoles?

No one wants and XBOX1, yes you made a sweet medie extender that plays games from 1997, but no one wants it.
Back on point, does the ps3 upconverts regular DVDs, does the 360? |

I can also play all of my MP3s over the network through the XBox1. I can watch YouTube videos on the TV over my XBox1. I can store all my favorite DVDs on the HD on the XBox1 (no need to keep a stack of discs around). I watched the Cowboys vs Seahawks game this weekend on the TV through the XBox1 (it wasn't broadcast in my area). I can watch your mother's German Scheisse movies on the XBox1. Didn't I already go through this??? Have I proved my point? Can I go now?

It's not a hardware issue; it's politics. They both can scale content to 1080p. The problem is that the powers that be are all retarded, and won't allow DVD to be scaled to 1080p over an analog connection. If you use a digital connection (HDMi) then you can scale up to 1080p.
We're all using fixed pixel displays, typically at 1920x1080. So at some point a 720x480 signal must be converted to fit the display. WGaF (that's who gives a fuck) if it's converted at the source device, or at the display. Anyway... |
um yeah to me the ps3 is just a winner something about the xbox just never felt right for me ever. So with sony i shall stay.
|
What is the deal with PS2 games looking like shit on the PS3? Results of scaling? I was expecting PSX -> PS2 results, with the smoothing stuff, but I was amazed that my PS2 games look like shit in high def on the PS3. Which is why I want to get a PS2 to play PS2 games.
|
I have a ps3 and friends have xbox 360. The xbox 360 seems to have a wider variety of games. PS3 seems to make all games as realistic as possible (not always the most fun). Sometimes the arcade style feel is more appealing. The big game negative I have about the ps3 is most games are only one player unless playing online. Xbox seems to make a lot of two player offline games. PS3 this month will be able to stream netflix. I believe the ps3 is better at controlling sound. I know bluray isn't a concern, but I did just hear that xbox will be coming out with a bluray player (only confirmation is colleague at work, so no real proof).
Game Play: Xbox Media Center: PS3, due to blue ray, sound control, and now movie streaming. PS3 capabilities are easy to upgrade because everything is software based. New firmware means new capabilities |
360 streams Netflix.
PS3 handles advanced audio codecs because it has an advanced player. I suspect when/if 360 gets a BR player, it will also handle advanced audio codecs. |
PS3 will get netflix
|
I don't want an original xbox. I had one and just recently gave it away for a case of beer (long since consumed). It was chipped and had an upgraded (80gig) HD too. I doubt that the original xbox has the capability to project nicely onto a 100" screen when the viewing distance is about 10ft. I need HD, because I'm a whore for pretty.
But thanks for playing. |
