That pretty well outlines why I was interested in a 3x magnifier for my carbine AR, but also made me realize how unreliable an add-on piece really could be in a 'rough' situation. Not like I'm taking my rifle into combat like ever, but if the need arrived that would just be an extra point of failure. This gets me thinking that I should maybe switch from my PA M4 clone to something like this:
Millett DMS 1-4x24 Designated Marksman Red-Dot Rifle Scope BK81002 w/ Free S&H
Savage Arms Mag Savage Mark II Series 22 Long Rifle 17 Mach 2 10-Round
SAVAGE MARK II FV-SR 22 LR THREADED BARREL @ Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore:
I'm more excited about this rifle than anything I've bought or built in the past and I don't even know why. Ever since Sam pointed out the deal on teh FV-SR I've looked high and low for an affordable .22lr bolt with at least some of the same features. Actually think I'm crazy for wanting to spend almost the same amount of money on optics as I did the rifle, but it should be worth it- As of right now I don't have anything close to a precision bolt and it's been something I've desired.
Speaking of AccuTrigger; You had me wondering if one could buy the Savage AccuTrigger and add it to a gun that didn't come with it. Poking around their website I found a Savage Axis SR with a threaded barrel (does not appear to be bull barrel, though) which does not include AccuTrigger. Searched around on Midway's site and only found Timney aftermarket triggers for Axis (which all got GREAT reviews btw) for around $99.00, alas no AccuTrigger. Savage model 10 FP-SR has the heavy threaded barrel and AccuTrigger, but it's $775.00 MSRP compared to the $338.00 of the Axis SR...

You got the best deal I've seen in a long time on that Savage... they're undercutting Buds by $50, which is damned hard to do.
After weeks of debating about my AR optics, and doing serious research on reticles and taking into consideration what I'm going to do with it and how good a shooter I am, I've decided I really need a 1-30x40 that's about 4" long for about $150.
But since that doesn't exist, I'm looking hard at the Nikon P223 3x32. The only problem is that they've got those gigantic zero-reset turrets that have no place on a fixed 3x optic.
I love a 1-4x scope, but the Primary Arms $119 isn't in stock, and the Millet $200 is too much money. There's a VISM and Konus option in between there, but I can't find enough positive reviews.
On another note, I'm thinking I need an actual bolt-action hunting rifle. I've read 3 awesome reviews on the Ruger American... the whole "made in America" thing is a selling point, but so is the price. I never thought I'd be interested in a $350 "rifle", but if I'm gonna buy one, that leaves a much bigger spread for an optic... not that you need to spend big bucks on a 400yd max scope.

I got 3 texts last night with friends looking to buy lowers. You haven't been able to get a lower in this part of California for months. I didn't actually watch the debate because I was doing Trivia Night at the local pub, but I had a sneaking suspicion something like this was mentioned after the texts...

AR lowers aren't what I'm concerned about, you'll still be able to get them. Standard capacity magazines and threaded barrels are the real endangered species.
Anyone else really sick of politicians and their bullshit rhetoric?
Assault Weapons Ban:
The 10-year ban was passed by Congress on September 13, 1994, and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton the same day
February 28, 1997:
At 9:17 am, Larry Phillips, Jr. and Emil Mătăsăreanu entered and robbed the North Hollywood Bank of America branch. Phillips and Mătăsăreanu were confronted by LAPD officers when they exited the bank and a shootout between the officers and robbers ensued. The two robbers attempted to flee the scene, Phillips on foot and Mătăsăreanu in their getaway vehicle, while continuing to engage the officers. The shootout continued onto a residential street adjacent to the bank until Phillips was mortally wounded, including by a self-inflicted gunshot wound; Mătăsăreanu was killed by officers three blocks away. Phillips and Mătăsăreanu are believed to have robbed two other banks using virtually identical methods by taking control of the entire bank and firing automatic weapons for control and entry past 'bullet-proof' security doors, and are possible suspects in two armored vehicle robberies.
On the morning of February 28, 1997, after months of preparation, including extensive reconnoitering of their intended target—the Bank of America branch located at 6600 Laurel Canyon Boulevard—Phillips and Mătăsăreanu loaded five rifles, one handgun, and approximately 3,300 rounds of ammunition in box and drum magazines into the trunk of their vehicle: two modified Norinco Type 56 S rifles, a modified Norinco Type 56 S-1, a semi automatic HK91 and a modified Bushmaster Dissipator. Phillips also carried a 9mm Beretta Model 92FS INOX, holstered underneath his jacket. Phillips wore a bulletproof vest and several pieces of home made body armor, covering his groin, shins, thighs, and forearms. To store box magazines for the rifles, in particular the HK91, he also wore a load bearing vest over the bulletproof one. Mătăsăreanu wore only a bulletproof vest, but included a metal trauma plate to protect vital organs. Additionally, both robbers had sewn watch faces onto the back of their gloves.

Never thought a .22 rifle scope would be so hard to buy. Visited Cabela's tonight to finger some scopes:
Vortex Diamondback 3-9x40
Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40
Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40
Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 4x40
Far as I could tell all 4 had identical optical clarity to my eyes at the same magnification level and nearly all the same price (with exception to the 4x40 Nikon):
The Vortex had a nice reticle, good weight, clear image, acceptable parallax from 20-70 yards, adjustment turrets felt positive and easy for my big fingers to grip and adjust, magnification ring was smooth and minimal resistance to adjust.
Burris Fullfield II also had a nice reticle, good weight, clear image, acceptable parallax from 20-70 yards, adjustment turrets felt positive but very hard for my fingers to grasp, magnification adjustment was very stiff and difficult to manipulate as it moved the entire eye bell.
Nikon Prostaff's reticle didn't appear to be terrible as I imagined, weight, clear image, parallax, large adjustment turrets with positive adjustment and easy to grasp, magnification adjustment was acceptable with little resistance.
Nikon Prostaff Rimfire had a standard duplex reticle with no compensation, good image quality, yatta yatta yatta, fixed magnification, $108.00.
What did I take away from my outing? Almost came home with a PTR-91, had it not been 7.62x39 I would've.....
Far as rifle scopes go... Still can't make my mind up. Thinking honestly I'll just buy the damn Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40, it's in the middle of price range and honestly had great optic quality to my shitty eyes so it'll probably get the job done. Whatever $30 I saved not buying the Vortex I'll throw down extra on rings, I guess.
