Lots of plastic in this thread recently, lets see some wood and steel! Post your favorite old timer, I'll start:
I don't always buy guns, but when I do, I prefer old growth steel.
Series one 6 5/8" Colt Automatic Target Pistol. Production date is probably 1922 based on serial number, barrel profile and markings (or lack thereof.) Guns from 1922 are kinda funny because its a transition year between features, and mine is within 200 consecutive units of the "approximate cutoff" that Colt uses in their records. The grip angle is as weird as it looks. If you hate 1911's you are sure to hate this gun.
The series one guns produced before 1932 are NOT designed for modern high velocity ammunition so I really need to pay attention to what I feed her. The CCI Sub-Sonic 40gr lead HP clock in at 1050fps in a 6" barrel so they are just about perfect, and about the only "standard velocity" ammo I can regularly find that is anywhere close to "historically correct." Groups sizes are indistinguishable from my 6" Hammerli X-esse Sport Comp if I do my part. The trigger on the Hammerli is better, but the balance on the Colt is unreal. She's no lightweight, unloaded she comes in at 1lb 12.5oz but the weight makes for nearly zero recoil or muzzle flip. I would try to describe shooting this gun, but I found a better description:
I've probably got a dozen firearms chambered in .22LR by now, but this is still far and away my favorite.
Ok, your turn! Show me what you got!

Now standing in one corner of a boxing ring with a .22 caliber Colt automatic pistol, shooting a bullet weighing only 40 grains and with a striking energy of 51 foot pounds at 25 feet from the muzzle, I will guarantee to kill either [boxer] Gene [Tunney] or Joe Louis before they get to me from the opposite corner. This is the smallest caliber pistol cartridge made; but it is also one of the most accurate and easy to hit with, since the pistol has no recoil. I have killed many horses with it, cripples and bear baits, with a single shot, and what will kill a horse will kill a man. I have hit six dueling silhouettes in the head with it at regulation distance in five seconds. It was this type of pistol that Millen boys’ colleague, Abe Faber, did all his killings with. Yet this same pistol bullet fired at point blank range will not dent a grizzly’s skull, and to shoot a grizzly with a .22 caliber pistol would simply be one way of committing suicide

Also, you aren't paying a new tax. The tax break or reduction you received on your payroll taxes (where was your "thank you" to Obama and Congress when that stimulus measure went through) expired on January 1. It's to "pay for" Social Security and Medicare.

Metal (aluminum counts!) and wood (altamont grips). And the reason I was asking about 22lr.
I've been looking for a 1911 in 9mm for myself for a while and wanted to get Meg something similar so she knew the controls, and came upon this 85% scale aluminum 1911 22lr at the local shop for cheaper than Buds had it, and $100 less than the shop by my work. And the old guy behind the counter was super cool and helpful, perfect for someone as complete ignorant about this stuff as I am.
J-woww and her boyfriend were there buying guns too.
Still trying to decide on my pistol.

^Very sexy... if the wife hadn't just decided we need a new house, I'd have probably convinced her to let me start buying guns again. I'm seriously not ******* around though when ammo prices come down again... 10,000rds in .22lr/9mm/.223/12ga is the goal. And then I'll start in on small quantities of .40/.45/.38spl/.308/.30-06... like 500rds of each just in case.
I really need to get a semi-auto .22lr rifle and a .45 pistol.

That GSG-22 is probably the ticket I'm looking for, but I gotta admit that I've never researched the full extent of 10/22 mods. The ATI stock is a bit... whats the word... horrible. I really need to start hitting the local pawnshops routinely and wait for something cheap and "stock" to show up. The Choate collapsible is more suited to my tastes.

Damned good deal considering... Aguila 117gr HP's.
20boxes at $12.50ea and $21shipping makes $271 for 1000rds.
That's FREAKING cheap for name-brand hollow-points even if there wasn't a shortage.

Of course this doesn't include my "stockpile"... so I suppose new math is required. What I really need to do is get a buddy to go in halves with me on the equipment and agree to keep it at my house.

Went to Academy Sports tonight to exchange some socks my wife gave me for Christmas (we really get crazy around the holidays). I ended up with a few extra dollars of store credit so I figured I'd grab a box or two of ammo.
They were stripped clean. They had no 9mm at all, no .38 or .357 at all, no .22LR at all except for some shotshells. No .223 or 5.56 at all.
They had a fair amount of birdshot and some deer slugs, no buckshot left. They had the less popular deer rounds -- .260, .25-06, 7mm-08, stuff like that. They had some random shotshell rounds in a few different calibers. Finally I found a box of .45 ACP Blazer FMJ, 50 rds for $21 so I bought that.
Crazy. I knew places were running out but I hadn't actually seen empty store shelves before tonight.
