Yet Another Gun Thread

I agree with you all the way. I also gave the Burris a go. Found the exact issue to be true. Sold the Burris and ordered a vortex viper. It is lower profile for a better co-witness that I am hoping will help with closer shots. 3 dots are not my favorite and I ran Dawson's on my 17L. I went with the ported M&up on the assumption that it could help keep the red dot in the mix even though it is a trade off with night vision blindness. But I prefer weapon lights as well for night. In my line of work pistols are not a game changer so this is all just for theory and back up. I am more serious about the rifle.
I'll throw in my $.02 since I just finished this experiment...
M&P Pro CORE 9mm, mine's the standard, unported version. I carry a standard 4.25" M&P nine daily, and bought the Pro CORE as I was starting to get back into competitive shooting and wanted to give a slide mounted red dot a try. At 50, I'm starting to go farsighted, and can't get a hard focus on the front sight anymore without readers. I thought the red dot might help. I bought a Burris FastFire, and have shot ~500 rounds in a bunch of training, and several USPSA matches over the last 5 months. I found the red dot was fantastic at ranges over 15 yards, and in low light... I was able to get faster shots and better accuracy. Closer than 15 yards, and it was slower and less accurate (at a given rate of fire) than the stock iron sights. This was exacerbated when engaging multiple threats. I was able to develop a pretty good index to get on the dot out of the holster, but movement made it slower to pick back up than with irons.
With the FastFire, even the suppressor height sights are almost completely occluded by the base of the red dot. This may not be the case with other sights, but it made the sights useless, even as a 'flash' reference. I often ended up point shooting through the hoop, which was not as accurate as point shooting over the top of the gun with standard sights.
YMMV, but for me, the slight advantage outside 15 yards was not worth the penalty inside 15 yards, so I pulled it off the gun and ordered a set of sights from Dawson with a fiber optic front. I've never tried one, so we'll see how that works. I tend to like a bright front, and plain black rear sight.... I hate 3 dots...
I've got a Ruger 10/22 Takedown Lite on the way that'll be a good home for the FastFire.
EDIT: WRT M&P v. Glock... there's a butt for every seat. I'm a longtime 1911 shooter, and I prefer pretty much everything about the M&P to the Glock, but again, YMMV....

Was looking at the Black Friday stuff Cabela's has and ran across this.
Bushnell AR 3-12x40 with Redfield mount for $120.
Would you take the Vortex Crossfire 4-12x40 that's on sale for $130 w/o mount over this?
Edit: Sale ended. Didn't realize it was only for yesterday....

I've also been doing homework on a brand I discovered browsing SnipersHide... Athlon scopes seem to have taken a spot in the budget lineup next to Primary Arms... more homework to be done.
Also just found a smoking deal on the newer bodies Weaver Grand Slams. They are butt-ugly and haven't sold worth a ****, but glass from Japan and should be optically at least as good as Diamondbacks... the best deal is for a 3-12x42 for $199 from Natchezss... like I said, ugly scopes, but should be great glass for the money. https://www.natchezss.com/weaver-re-...cle-matte.html
PrimaryArms has the Crossfire II 4-16x50 on sale for $149... I'd have no problem with that scope on a deer gun or range plinker.
Vortex Crossfire II 4-16x50 AO Riflescope
Also at Primary Arms, if you want the slickest-****-for-the-money coated BCG, grab one of these, cheapest I've ever seen them...paid $120 for mine on a crazy good sale and I love it: FailZero EXO Coated M16 Cut Complete Bolt Carrier Group

Primary arms has the tlr-1 hl on sale for $99. That is the best price I have seen for that model.
I played around with the light tonight in various sized rooms. In our master bedroom (20x20), I experienced minimal loss of night vision after shutting it down. I tried the same in our master bath and it tool several seconds to see anything after shutting down with just seconds of use. 800 lumen is great for open areas but self blinding in small rooms.
Olight has an interesting light that is on a black friday deal through olightstore. $80 and it is called pl1 version II. 450 lumen AND it has a second low lumen navigation light. After a very brief search of reviews, it seems the first version suffered from poor attachment and that was fixed for version II. Not as pretty as other lights but definitely worth some additional research.

So... remember the picture of the 2 beaters I posted a couple weeks ago? I just sold them for $1000 cash.
It's a little stupid. I only had about $750 in building both of them. The guy who bought them from me had good feedback on a local forum and was legit. They were franken-beaters with out-of-spec quadrails and the cheapest of the cheap parts. I told him exactly what they were and he was cool with it.
I've also got 5 Anderson lowers that I've got up for sale. I'm selling 3 this weekend for $70ea. I only paid $50ea (again, Hillary defense), and 3 gunstores in town has them for $50ea still. There's a place locally selling Aero Precision Gen2's for $60ea... basically gonna swap the Andersons for Aero's and come out ahead on money. It's stupid.
I pay pretty close attention to the market, and I think we're about to see some pretty massive price drops after the election. Right now, people are in the Holiday buying mode and we just set another NICS record in November... December should be just as good, and then no more fear come late January. I think the demand for evil black rifles is going to drop off and prices are going to come down across the board.
But, I do need to build up the kitty a bit, because when the HPA comes, there's no telling what will happen to the gun market. There will be a lot of suppressor start-ups and they'll be looking to grab some market-share by offering deals... might drive the prices of guns up a little as people buy stuff they otherwise wouldn't have. Manufacturers will need to start selling everything with a threaded barrel option too.
Interesting times.

If anyone missed the tlr-1 hl's at 99.99, primary arms has them again at that price. Add to your cart to see the final price. I nearly bought another for my long guns. Tried it out on my mossberg 500 and with a little practice, I think I could manipulate the switch with my thumb. Must resist again.

Federal Automatch (for all my semi-auto plinking)
CCI Standard Velocity (for bolt-gun training)
CCI Quiets (for teaching)
CCI Stingers (for all other use)
All of this stuff is in at least 2 local Walmarts that I frequent. I've been stopping by a few times a week and buying whatever is there. I've got about 15k rds or so... will probably stop when I hit 20k and that will carry me through at leas the end of Trumps 1st term.
I traded away about 7k rds of every other random box I had... sucked not remembering what I had zero'd last and being all over the targets.
BTW... if you're looking for a smoking deal on an LPK, I think this is it... PSA MOE/QMS... basically you pay sale price for an MOE grip and ALG QMS trigger and get the rest of the parts for free. I've already got 2 spare QMS triggers that will go in my new AERO builds, or I'd have a couple on order already.

Just got back from a sweet morning. I met a guy and sold a pair of Anderson lowers for $140 that I only paid $100 for. Then I went to an LGS and bought two brand new Aero Gen 2's for $65ea. I've got three more Andersons to sell and then I'm gonna finish off the Aeros with those PSA/MOE/QMS lower kits.
I also got to handle a $500 Radical Firearms AR when I was at the LGS... for the money, stick with PSA or S&W.
