Here's another AV question for ya.

I have a 15'x18' room with the big screen at one end and the couch is at the end where it's opened to another room.

After months of reading AVS Forums, this is what I've come up with. I want a Home Theater System for DVD movies and want something I won't outgrow. I have 3 kids in diapers so it's hard to turn up the volume very much or even very often.

Wadda ya think?

TIA

RECEIVER: Onkyo TX-SR304 ($99) or TX-SR505 ($219)

SPEAKERS: Athena Point 5 MkII ($150)

SUBWOOFERS: ?

Dayton Sub100 ($100)
Dayton Sub120 ($150)
Athena AS-P4000
Athena AS-P400

electronics make it hard to NOT outgrow them. but maybe you can get 10 years out of the right system.

speakers are forever (until they rot)

I'll let Ben the expert give you the advice on what electronics to get

BEN: yah, black.

How about in which order one buys AV equipment? Should I buy the receiver first or speakers?

if you have neither, i can't imagine it matters...

but if you have both already (some speakers you dont like or a receiver you dont like) then get the one you'll get the most benefit from immediately. I suspect that'll be the receiver.

OR get the receiver and a pair of speakers for now.

were you not planning to buy all at once?

The last AV equipment I bought was an Aiwa bookshelf system. That was before any of my three kids. So, no I don't have anything at the moment.

It sounds like I would benefit greatly from the receiver, speakers, than the woofer in that order.

at $1500+, i'd also look at Outlaw / Emotiva / Oppo / other Internet Direct amps.

re: 3805
i almost bought this unit, but found a new H/K avr7300 (switchable hdmi back in '05) for 1/3 of the MSRP ($2300).

Oppo? makes receivers??

outlaw and emotiva seem to be a little niche. and didn't seem to have the HDMI in the photos even though they said it did (the latter)
