1. What is the best driving road (or at least most enjoyable) you've driven on?
2. What were you driving when you drove it? (pictures recommended, even non-Miata)

Mine is as follows:
Road - The B743 from Strathaven to Cumnock in East Ayrshire, Scotland.
Car - A rented 2011 Toyota Aygo Fire (3cyl, 67hp) that the GF and I named Bubba.

Hard to pick, Northern Cali has so many. I'll just post the newest I've found.
Only done on my M900 so far.

Platina Rd on the way from Redding, Ca to Highway 36. West of Redding, CA.





Yes, I know I need a rear tire.

 

Too many. One standout is a combo of Highway 1 and 101 from Yarmouth, NS to Annapolis Royal, NS. Early Sunday AM in an '87 Prelude with Eibachs and Koni Yellows. A long drive at go-to-jail speeds, and my wife never once threatened divorce.

 

Also too many.

But if I had to pick just one, it'd be Palomar Mountain, a little ways northeast of San Diego:











Drove this many times in the turbo '92, and once in the stock, 220,000 mile '90.

 

Baker City, OR to Wallowa Lake. Otherwise known as Hells Canyon. The single longest stretch of amazing roads I have ever driven. There is no end to the corners, switchbacks, fast long sweepers, and long straight aways. Plus you will never see a cop and or cars depending on the time of year you go.

For me would be a few roads in NE OK, or nearly all 2 lane roads in NW AR.

When I still had my sportbike it was very common for us to put in 400-500 mile days leaving Tulsa around 6am and returning around 6pm with stops and lunch.

NW AR has some absolutely fantastic roads. 16, 62, Pig Trail, 123.

 

For those 10 seconds or less I am free.

 

Sweet Palomar... it's in the top five things I miss about California.

I'll go ahead and mention the obvious; The 1. North of LA of course.

 

My favorite stretch of road on earth... so far

 

This was a fun road. Probably my favorite thing about Indiana...

Some parts have 90 degree turns with tons of runoff, other parts have crazy elevation changes and hairpins in the middle of a forest. Some of the most fun I've ever had in my Miata.

 

Beat me too it. Unless there are tourists, and then I'd rather sodomize myself with a pointed stick.

That's Highway 68 @ Laguna Seca -> Laureles Grade -> W Carmel Valley Rd -> E Carmel Valley Rd -> Arroyo Seco Rd -> River Rd -> back to Highway 68. Its scenic enough for a trip around the Gabalan range. Really its just a hell of a lot of fun. Two lane backroad thrashing at its best. Warning though, the road is a bit rough in some places. If you wreck/breakdown/die on E Carmel Valley Rd or Arroyo Seco, no one will ever find your body. No cell reception out there either. Google massively underestimates the drivetime, its more like 2.5-3 hours and that depends on how brave you are in the corners. Good news is the River Road section is part of the "Monterey Wine Country" tour.

State route 715 is my favorite few miles of road. Its success as my favorite road is mostly attributed to U.S. 36. Because of U.S. 36, it's easy to find and get to, but also because of U.S. 36, no one travels along Ohio 715. You see, OH-715 is a twisty road which dead ends into the generally straight U.S. 36 at both ends, with only a single T intersection along its length.

 

How do you know of this place in my state and I don't?

Here's my boring tuning/testing road, starting about 2 blocks from my house.



Maybe I should contact the good people of Oregon City to organize a Targa like race. It takes a mile of 25mph and probably has 2-3 dozen homes. The next 7 miles back roads has probably the same amount.

 

It's been a long time, so I had forgotten about this run until you reminded me. A guy in Carmel recommended this route - Carmel to Jekel Vineyards in Greenfield, a quick taste, then back. I've done it 3 times, only got stuck behind somebody once for about 10 minutes. Even in a rented Taurus, this is a great, great drive. Just fill up first.

I'm glad I discovered track driving because it saved my life.

NSFW language. The part to watch is 4:00 through 9:00. After 9:00 it turns right onto US129, which is a multi-lane road, but still pretty curvy.




EDIT: Then from my childhood, I remember riding in the back seat of a Datsun 510 on Kole Kole Pass Road on Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

 

Gets to the good stuff about 2:20

 

This is a pretty typical weekend drive route for my buddies and I. Gets crazy after 10am so gotta be up and at it early.
