I likey. Looks like there's a lot of easy cleanup opportunities. Wires can be cut where the speakers used to be, as can the last bottom panel on the dash. Wires seem to be all over the driver side fender hump. That one red wire coming out of the firewall will most likely melt, ask me how I know. Remove your passenger side strut bar mount if you're not going to use it. Does your track car really need a charcoal canister? Don't mean to be ----, the car actually looks awesome! What's the random welding shot for?

 

Thanks Curly, The car just got back from the cage fabricator so i didn't get to cleaning everything up. I plan to remove all that junk and paint the cage probably green.

The random welding shot is me playing with a new toy trying to fabricate some brackets for a V-mounted intercooler. The front bumper is handing off because its off like every two weeks or so.

What is that plate under the windscreen for? Does that cam cover have to be cut to show the camgears or does it come that way? Worried about any damage to the timing belt?

As far as I know that's a protege or 323 cam cover, both of which don't cover the cams like a miata cover, and so it's required to expose the gears like that, also good to adjust adjustable cam gears.

 

Whoa, that cage looks really tight...good ****. I have a wire back there and it didn't melt, along with a few other things. However, you must wrap the oil and water lines and the vac hose because they will melt. You want to use reinforced carburator fuel hose for those vac lines because I had a problem with flimsy ones collapsing in vacuum on teh BOV. You want to get your vac-hose fittings very tight btw, they will vibrate loose.

We need an AF-compliant heat-shield group-fab party. Its kind of funny how the hard-core track crew has basically identical cars, with 3- varying levels of prep, Savington has the big-baller ****, you have the reasonable track toy, and I have the old-man Ferrari substitute dual-purpose weekend car.

What do you have to report from the performance of the new turbo kit? Torque is fun, isn't it?

 

Wow, you've made lots of progress. Looks good. Have you tracked the car since the cage install? I'd bet it's a lot stiffer now.
What kind of MIG setup is that? I'm in the market.

 

God damm wastegate WONT open, This is day two with it out from the cage shop so its got maybe 50 more miles on the motor. The boost onset isn't terrible at all, just wish the gate would open so i don't boost 20psi+

I am yet to track it, still a few more kinks to work out in the system. So far i haven't really noticed a difference in stiffness on the street.

Its a cheap HF 110amp flux core :/ If you wanna come weld some **** feel free to shoot me a call, but its not pretty lol

Any reason you are keeping the charcoal canister setup? Just curious.

Upper port thats plugged in this picture is now open to atmosphere and the bottom one is to a nipple pre-bov.

The line is larger than the nipple on the wastegate, safety wired on so that shouldn't be the issue at all. Did you have to change springs inside the wastegate at all on your setup?

Flux core MIG's are about impossible to get pretty welds with... if there's a gas conversion kit for that one, I'd look into getting it. The gas isn't expensive and it makes a big difference.

Second thing I'd recommend is take a welding class... it's amazing how fast you get better at it with someone who knows what they're doing giving you pointers. The MIG/TIG class I took last spring made a big difference, now I just need a place at home to plug in my TIG.

I got the 11.5psi spring set-up from the factory. After you check the seal on each plug (two on the bottom, one on the top), take your gate apart and see what's in it. Also confirm that you put the fire ring in correctly, and tapped the top of the wastegate with a deadblow as the final step before tightening the clamps. Take the gate off and see if the piston moves freely, make sure the diaphram isn't torn or kinked, and let me know what you find.
