Do you have a roll bar yet? Need to have you out as a guest sometime during the holidays. I decided to rid this car of a soft top this winter. I got fed up with soft tops when Robbins decided that they weren't going to make my custom ordered Parchment top after telling me repeatedly over 4 months that it was going to be ready in 2 weeks. I wanted the parchment color to keep the original color scheme as well as keep heat down in the summer. Should have just bought a standard black softtop, but now I have a mismatched hardtop and no car money :hahano: I'm happy I bought the hardtop, but wish I had enough car money set aside to get a roll bar, a pair of the Sparco Revs, and a set of harnesses. It's just a matter of time, learning to be patient. |

I don't have the expertise to critique your driving but what App/software did you use to create that video overlay and was it easy to do? That's a pretty nifty for comparing driving lines.

Agree on software. That comparo was cool. I think RaceChrono is now a paid app, but RaceRender is like $30 and you can have multiple data streams and they have a syncing tool that allows you to sync up your video and data with no real issue. I thought that the video was cool just because we were taught the same lines by the same club, but it's the minor stuff like shifting a bit early that allowed me to catch up. |
Some actual content to post:
I've helped out this team the past few years and they race really clean. The #133 flipped off Rob in the braking zone to T1 and just punted into him in T2. Fucking awful. |
That was really stupid and senseless. WTF??
What kind of race was this? And why are people like that allowed on track? |
Looks like eastern Chumpionship race at VIR from this last weekend?
So...a Chumpcar race |
He was so far left and clear on the pass, it had to be intentional or part failure. It was like 2 car widths clear.

People (generally!!!) won't hit what they can see, and won't turn down on what they can see. If you're going to put yourself on the inside of a car at the apex of a turn, make sure he can see you before HE turns in for the corner. This should be especially true in endurance racing...and doubly true in Chumpcar/Lemons endurance racing. It doesn't look like this was the case in the final turn. The BMW driver did not see Rob on the inside and "turned down" on him. The BMW driver probably felt like Rob dive bombed him and tried to turn him. He was probably angered and may have tried to retaliate a little in T2. As someone who is building a really clean car into a ChumpCar I'm really hoping to avoid these kinds of shenanigans... |
Welp, I guess in Lemons and Chump, you need to remember:
1. You are potentially driving with really inexperienced and unaware a**holes. Just like a freeway in LA. 2. It's an endurance race. The point is to finish so you and your teammates get lots of fun seat time. I think you're right about the first turn. The BMW's driving was erratic and "Rob" would have been wise to give him room. You need to spot these types on the track to survive. The second turn was pure road rage. Look how long the BMW is on the brakes compared to the car ahead of him. He's dragging it down and forcing "Rob" to pass so he could take him out. The "bird" through the window net makes his intentions clear. |

Is it general practice for the instructor to drive your car? I can't see this being a practical way of learning anything if you're the student. I picked up a ton of stuff when an instructor drove my car for a session. Then again, this was my instructor. IMSA | Porsche GT3 Cup USA | Kristin Treager And here is a pic of me screwing up "The Bitch" at Hallett going backward the next day. Got in way deep on the brakes. Dropped the right rear off the curbing, but just kept my foot in it and pulled it back on track and kept going. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1418233516 |
There could be a whole new thread on bad Chump Car driving. I've never been out on course as a driver, but I've seen some stupid stuff in the races I've worked as a crew (and I have a limited view of the course, haha).

There's little chance the BMW driver knew he was there (ie on the inside @ the apex). It's very likely the guy was more concentrated on the two cars in front of him then he was on the car 4-5 car lengths back.

As someone who is building a really clean car into a ChumpCar I'm really hoping to avoid these kinds of shenanigans... e: your use of "last turn" confused me a bit, I think that the Hogpen was a truly accidental bump, but everyone came out of it OK https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1418234812 And taken from the Chump forums: I won't name names but the guy driving the 133 e30 is a good friend of mine. He is a former Grand-Am driver who's has a dozen Daytona 24s under his belt. Basically, a good guy. The hogpen hit was probably just a matter of it being kind of busy. But it's kind of a textbook "racing incident", the shit after the front straight is some (inexcusable) amateur hour bullshit, though. The Camaro backed way the fuck off and Rob's turn-in for T1 was super late to pass on the outside edge of the track. |

A lot of people expressed disappointment at his behavior on track due to this incident, and another shouting fit in pits at some point this weekend. I get it, some people get red mist and do stupid shit, but I am really surprised by the "he didn't see him" argument. Especially with the middle finger. I am in the same boat...Building a "nice" chumpcar and hoping this type of behavior won't be tolerated. |
I don't think anyone his saying he didn't see him before the second hit.
What I see is erratic driving from the 133. He ran into rob in that earlier corner and likely didn't see him, though he really made a sudden move there. Obviously the second hit was completely, utterly intentional and he should be ejected from the race and the series for that bullshit. As a track noob that's what I see. |
I think you guys are missing the point where I was solely talking about the incident at 0:11 in the video (ie "the last turn"). To me it seems that this incident may have instigated the T2 shunt.
I was in no way saying the BMW driver didn't see him in T1 and T2, he clearly knew where he was. I would agree that the contact in T2 was completely intentional unless there was some sort of mechanical failure. Also, back to the incident at 0:11 into the video, it may have been a "racing incident" and may have been "textbook", but that doesn't mean it wasn't completely avoidable. Had Rob assumed that the BMW driver didn't see him and not stuck his nose in on him, maybe all of this would have never happened (in no way am I insinuating the actions of the driver of car 133 are anything other than abhorrent). I was not at the event, and do not know the drivers nor the cars, I'm just going off of what I see in the posted video. Finally, anyone can buy a seat in Grand Am and/or buy a seat in the Rolex 24 hours. It is in no way an indication of skill level, intelligence, or aptitude. Let's just say it was a whole lot harder to get my SCCA competition license then it was to get my Grand AM license... |

Technically based on chump rules, they would probably blame rob for both hits (if the second was deemed not intentional). Just quick reading of contact during passing says that the pass is not complete/safe until the passing car is one car length ahead. It's a rule that no one is likely to follow in the literal sense, but I can see it being difficult to see a car on the outside of a turn, even if he is along side you. Carry on ;). |

His move may appear sudden but to me it looks totally predictable. He's taking a somewhat standard racing line through the corner, and the camaro in front of him is going significantly slower. So he moves over to avoid the slow moving camaro and to get down to the apex. Regardless of all that, I agree that the driver of 133 should have been booted from the race and had his driving privelages revoked... |
You're right, I misspoke. Rob did hit him, but with the way 133 was driving it didn't look like he was going to go for the apex, it looked like 133 had seen rob and was letting him by before passing the camaro... then suddenly 133 decided to pass the camaro, not seeing rob at the apex.
Anywhooooo... |
