If you want simple, fast, easy to take care of, Elise is the clear choice.
As far as I've read, old NSXs need suspension work to get it to handle. Honda reversed the spring rates between the 2 generations because they found it to be hard to drive. And there were also a lot of other changes between 1st gen and 2nd gen. But then a 2nd gen is unaffordable so...

I'll let you know by PM. 3 years ago prices are different from prices now. But these days, 'normal' FD can cost anywhere from 9k to 18k depending on the condition. Abnormal meaning missing trans, blown engine, or at the other end of the spectrum, decked out, swapped, single turbo, etc. If you're really looking into buying one, let me know I'll give you some pointers.

my buddy just sold his second lsx fd. It sold for 25k. it was a beast. i drove his older, heavier, slower 385whp fd and it felt great. his last one had 516whp and was fully done up. clean plain white exterior, r type frt. bumper, small great sounding stereo system, electric power steering, stoptech bbk (not enough brake for the track!) tein coilovers (the expensive ones, not mono flex) ac, new carpet, blah blah blah. i hated it cuz i couldn't have it. oh, it was sans sunroof which was really nice too.

101k on the chassis, 20k on the engine (new matched rotors, new housings, 3mm seals). I've owned it for 3 years now I think. Before this I had a S5 N/A FC and a S5 TII FC.

FD, obviously I love mine to death. But it does take a lot of commitment. But judging from the general skill level and DIY abilities of this forum, you guys wouldn't have any problems. And I just want to say what I've said 100 times before. Reliability on FD really isn't an issue if you make the proper modifications (cooling, replacing coolant tank, running proper lubrication, etc). All the stories of exploding FDs comes from kids who treat it like a supra and just slap on a straight exhaust and turn up the boost without upgrading the fuel and tuning it. It only takes one bad detonation to shatter the apex seals and send them flying through your motor.

No. Our FD lasted from 93 to 95. While we got the R1 and R2 trim packages (suspension revisions and added oil coolers as well as the front lip and different seats), we never got all the other cool tweaked versions either. I always wondered why Mazda didn't do much with the colors here either: red, white, black, silver (Silverstone), Montego Blue and the ultra rare yellow. We never got the dark grey, pearl white or the bright blue :( On the plus side, the color code for the Spirit R is 25G, which also happens to be the color code for the 2002 SE Miata that I have
My first car was a 91 GTU FC. Loved it. Will have another one some day.
Seriously David, that car is perfect.
