Worst Instructor Ever

lolol. He's so aggressive, but quite the badass. I used to watch BTCC at work a few years ago. In one of the races, he dive bombed the leading car on the last lap, and they both started spinning violently. Matt spun in the incorrect direction and the lead guy spun right to where he needed to go to get back on track and win. Matt ended up 5th or 6th.

What cars there were running 1:02s and what time of year was it? I was out there it was in the 60*s. Were you out there when they were running the old configuration? They have redone the track fairly recently. On the new config. running a 1:06 in a car is really fast... some Porsche Cup cars were testing and running 1:05-1:06 I'll be in Columbia SC that weekend otherwise I wouldn't mind coming out there and hanging out.

I instruct with SV and I always ask my student if I can drive their car for the first two laps to show them the line. Having said that, I would prefer to drive their car at 20mph around the track for the first lap so I have time to talk about the lines. This is most important at WSIR, where the line is basically impossible to teach unless you can show the student exactly where to place the car - and because if they **** up the car placement in one corner (turn 9), you're going off in a big way, and someone died there a year ago. My biggest worry when driving a student car is going fast enough so that I don't hold up the ultra-beginner group.
I don't spend an entire session beating on a student's car - I take it for two easy laps, pointing out markers and braking zones and flag stations, and then give them the keys and pray to god they don't kill me.
If they refuse, I'll just take them out in my car, but it's usually quieter in theirs.

That is exactly how I do it. I like to drive a new student’s car for a couple of laps but it is very slow and I am describing aspects I think are important to know about the track definitely not pushing the car. The group I usually instruct with generally dose it this way for all students. I have had other instructors insist you shouldn’t drive your own car too hard with a student in the passenger seat because it will make the student too aggressive and try to push too hard But I always seem to find the opposite. Show them some fast laps and things start clicking and they start to get it much faster when they can feel what a good line and transitions feels like but I would never do it in a students car unless specifically asked by the student. But I would never do it in a student’s car unless specifically asked by the student and even then only if I am comfortable with what type of car it is.

Speaking of which, are you instructing at the next alfa track day? I want you as my instructor this time.

Ya at the last Alfa Club day we were both at I had a very non-communicative instructor. Being my first track day I must have been doing something wrong yet he would barely communicate anything to me and I feel like that is why I was so hard on my brakes during my first session. Riding with you showed me a much better line and answered some questions my instructor couldn't answer very clearly and I did much better my second time out but unfortunately it was too late for my brakes.

One of my dislikes about instructing at Bremerton is the course layout is so basic it is like a super high speed simple autocross course and a lot of the turns are best taken by the shortest distanc approch. Some students are doing a respectable job fairly quickly and improvements are not so noticeable so you do start to feel like you are just going for a ride and not really helping that much. Seat time behind the wheel is helping those drivers more than anything.

Wayne and Bbundy. Let me know when you guys plan on running at Pacific some time. I'd love to come join you. Maybe talk Curly into coming up too.
I can't believe what an amazing tool that instructor was. "I'll just lay back and watch this first la-- Don't you know smooth? Your line sucks! Who taught you to drive? The DMV gives people like you a license? Pull over so I can get the hell out before you kill us!"

This thread has lost focus completely. Therefore I don't care that I'm continuing the B.S.
I'd love a day at Pacific, especially surrounded by MS knowledgeable people, however I'm most likely going to be quitting my job and starting school full time within the next few months, so I don't know if I'll have the $$. Keep me in the loop though.

NW Alfa is pretty laid back not as many people running 100k plus cars and stuff who are mostly posers as some other clubs. Just guys trying to have fun on the track. Instructors can be quite helpful and many of them have there own styles and tact in communicating. Not all students are the same either. What works with one student may not work so well with the next. I try to do the best I can, sometimes I think I do real well other times I find it difficult. It makes me feel good when the student has fun and I think some things were learned or improved upon.

Holy ****! I was actually at this track day, and I met the guy who was driving this MS3. Me and him were the only guys who were actually going fast, he did pass me and wayyyy overcooked a turn doing it, but he was seriously a competent driver. My instructor also told me I needed to "tone it way down". Hooked on driving was a fun event, but I'm never making the mistake of doing beginner group again. They act like you've never driven fast before, and I can see why, but I don't think I belong in beginner group if thats how they treat you.
