Car blew up because you put as much thought and effort into your car as you did into your first post.

Welcome to the site, do us a favor and post your "for sale" thread before you tear the car up any more. We don't expect you to be able to ever fully repair the car, rather the expectation is that you'll buy a bunch of new parts, tear the car apart, and never put it back together again.

Don't.

Just sell it.

And buy a 240.

You honour me with your rage

This is likely a split ring land from detonation.
Note oil from catch can seeping out from extreme blow-by.
Was tuned at 13 psi on 98 octane. That is New Zealands premium petrol available at the pump.

your 98 RON is our 93 R+M/2

I'm going to estimate that your 160 kW on a dynapack is ~250 whp on a dynojet (converted and fudged up 15%). I'd say it was pretty clear that you were running on the hairy edge of an NB motor.

Consider your car another statistical data point under the big bell curve of "my NB blew up at 250 rwhp"

I doubt it's even that... even with the heavy correction factor, he's sitting at about 215whp.

OP, details on setup?

This video shows dynapack displaying lower power levels:
I’ve seen it the other way on dyno charts and also the same.
My car was likely between 190 hp and 240 hp I think.

Set up is a T25 or T25G from the HKS turbo kit sold in Japan. It was exported to NZ on an f-con and then switched to a greedy blue e manage piggyback with oxygen clamp and wide band. I’m now switching to a link G4 amongst other changes. I don’t think it was the fudgey piggy back set up that blew the ring land though.

In any case ill post on any interesting discoveries, my new set up and the VVT build im working on.

depends how fudgey it was tuned.

if it was tuned like fudge, then the fudgey piggyback could easily be to blame.

Dude, no, stop.
Megasquirt.

Im thinking it was either bad tuning or a dirty injector.
Do you have a wideband?

Its the blue hoses. They only support 10psi.

In my view the G4 is more accessible than an MS unit and it only costs a few hundred more.

Im thinking it was either bad tuning or a dirty injector.
I dont have much reason to doubt the tune. ST Hi-Tech is run by a guy from Japan and he knew the car back to front. Top end gear and a good reputation. The place was staked with Nissan GTR's and other very tricked out track cars.
I suspect fuelling though.

Do you have a wideband?
Yes.

Normally I would agree, but it has the shiny manifold which has been widely documented to solve that problem.

Why VVT?

Guess if you already have one... Going to have to control it though. Will the g4 do it?

Ms3 is pretty sweet- I also recommend going that way. MSlabs can ship to NZ.
Sure it's not the shiney valve cover offsetting the blue?

I want to do something a bit cool, a bit different. So I’m going to focus on head work, cams and VVT. Its a pretty asthmatic engine so it will be interesting to see the results. I have a feeling it will livin it up and give the engine a responsive feel.
I have the standard 99 1.8 in my car.
I have another a day over due to be delivered with a spare 6 speed and the VVT arriving tomorrow. Fingers crossed its got its loom :-(
I ideally wanted a BP-D from the Familiar GTR or GT-AE but can’t find one. The crank set up is nice in those. Im pretty worried about my crank, also the 6 speeds in general.
The VVT crank set up is slightly nicer than my 99 and VVT is fascinating.
Ill drop the standard 99 in for now, tune at 8ish psi on a G4. Tear down my blown 99 and build the VVT.
The G4 should run VVT. I think its just a solenoid that’s on or off. I did look in to MS units but the 3 tuners i spoke to hated them and wont work with them. The only MS tuner i could find was in a nearish city but works from a garage dyno and doesn’t have the same rep as the guys in my home city. I want to work with a guy who tunes race cars and i found one who does V8 super cars and use to work on Mazda 323’s so he knows the BP’s well. He wont work with me if i go MS and i wouldn't know what to do on my own.
The valve cover sure is shiney, the engine bay is full of shiney **** so i don’t understand why it shouldn't be good for as much as 18 psi. Just one of those things i guess.

I'm not even going to read anymore of your jibber jabber.

Doing things "cool and different" is a quick way to end in utter failure a good majority of the time.

Make a build thread.
Post pictures of cats.
Maybe a few of the car.
Let us know how it turns out.

and i wouldn't know what to do on my own.
Said no successful person ever.
