I'm right there with you bro. The thing that changed my mind is when I got to drive my buddies turbo'd NA 1.6 at an autocross. The car has been turbo'd for over 8 years with an old simple begi kit(journal bearing t25, fmu, bipes acu, cast manifold, fmic etc.). MAYBE 170 whp. That car is just fun as ***** to drive even though its not a ball bearing turbo making 300whp with a badass tubular manifold and what not. I realized I need to start simple, inexpensive and upgrade from there.

I think that with all the extremely badass miatas on this forum, it might get lost just how fast and fun a simple 200whp setup would be like in person.

Just makes friends with some one who has a garage. Join a local car forum and you will find lots of people willing to let you come over and tear into your miata.

I'm living in an apartment in CT but my dad (in mass) has one of those pop up tarp garages. I built my suspension over the winter in that. They are surprisingly warm with a kerosene heater or a work light throwing some heat. Going to suck driving back every weekend this winter to work on the car but ehh.

Looking at it a BEGI Shanghai-S with the t25, ss separated gases dp, SS lines, heat sheild, and boost gauge is only $2,531. If i skip the ceramic coating I can save another $150. Add ecu, injectors, clutch, ebay intercooler and wideband. hhhmm....

I am in the same boat as you man. I just priced out a FM2 turbo kit with all the goodies to track it and the price was a little over 8k. If you don't want the full 3in exhaust its around 7k. I been back and forth with ecus for months now and the MS 3sx will work but for vvt its just to new for my taste. I know its a lot more money but the hydra from FM is the way to go and comes with everything you need. plug and play and has full support from FM

Reverant is talking about another group buy in his MS2's over in the classifieds. One of those might be worth it to get up and running. Then when i feel like controlling VVT and tuning some more I can get the VVT tuner from 949 or diy autotune, it's only a $200 ad on. All that and a lc-1 and I think you're still under half the price of the hydra, but the hydra is a really, really nice unit with the bonus of vendor support. These choices are heard, but fortunately these guys convinced me to keep my car

The Enhanced MS2 ECU, fully plug and play, for the 01-05 is $780 through me. This does not controll the VVT though, you will need the controller from DIYAutoTune for that. Still less than $1000 for the lot though.

Get a shanghai, ebay fmic, MS2 from Reverant or Brain, and a wideband.
Install MS+wideband, get comfortable with the ms and tuning, install turbo setup, get comfortable with stock injectors and >8psi, then go from there.

That is pretty much one of the best "bang for buck" and practical routes to take when going turbo. I'm sure most, if not all, on here will agree.

18psi that's a very good point. While I've always really wanted to just go out and buy a fm or begi kit with all the bells and whistles it's not very realistic. I got my suspension done over the winter including time spent corner weighting it aligning it, testing it, re aligning it....I was going into this turbo thing thinking I could bang it out just as quickly. However I have WAY less experience and there are WAY more parts to acquire.

Would it be worth looking at the regular begi starter kit? It comes with a ss 18" separated gases DP vs the Shanghai's mild steel dp with the tiny 4" separated gases pipe. Worth the extra 700?

I guess I could put off doing a clutch and coolant re-route if I'm still using stock injectors. Keep the power around 150-160 WHP. It'll be just like a mazdaspeed miata, except purple and without the annoying power delivery and shitty redline!
