Default Am I likely To Need A TPS?

Im having my MSPNP built shortly and already on my stock NA I have idle issues. However with A/C on it idles higher and is better. I realise this could be just the idle screw needs adjusting higher. But should I get the jumpers put in my MSPNP board whilst it gets build so I can put a variable TPS on to save on having to get it done afterwards?

Or could my 1991 1.6 NA be fine on idle?

I was fine without it. There was a dip that makes tos worth it, but not required.

Your car should idle fine without the TPS, but better with it. If you are particularly concerned about idle quality, this is something to do that I'd recommend highly. You can have the v-TPS hardware mode done without actually running one so long as you remember to unplug your stock TPS.

Ben could you clarify that for me. Do you mean if I have the MSPNP set up so the jumpers are done for a VTPS. I can still run my car with stock TPS and the ECU will run fine even though the modification has been done?

If this is the case I will ask Braineack if he could do it. If not then I think I will leave it the same to avoid extra cost.

Ok then lets go down that route. I have read a few bits on doing it but how easy is it setting the ECU up to work with it? I know the jumpers have to be soldiered in but I read you have to calibrate it or something like that?

Do you still recommend using the BMW boschh vTPS?

Yes, but you have to unplug the stock TPS. You can disconnect the pigtail right at the TPS. This is true with either an MSPNP or DIYPNP, but it sounds like you are getting a DIYPNP.

Yes its one off Braineack so I believe its a DIY Plug and play. Thanks for clearing that up Ben. I will look into prices for the vTPS so I can have it ready for when the ECU arrives.

More a mechanical tps question than a wiring one. My old throttle body was apparently an automatic style one with vTPS. The interface between the vTPS and the tb was a 'butterfly' almost flush with the driver's side of the tb. I broke my throttle shaft, and got a new/old tb. This one, turns out, has a long shaft coming out of the driver's side, apparently this tps has a through-hole. Long story short, I need something to do AE before this weekend. Can I JUST use mapdot, or should I source some different type of vTPS? If the latter, which one do I need? If the former, does anyone have any baseline settings for mapdot for an n/a 1.6?

Yes you can use just mapdot, most cars will run just fine with it provided they are tuned correctly.

Check the DIY basemaps for a good starting point.

Thanks Jeff, I'll check out mapdot stuff in the base maps. I may also source a Wells tps201 in the meantime. AE was working fine with tpsdot, I HATE to mess with a good thing!

I see people are talking about the vTPS off an auto miata. Can you use these successfully or is it better to get one off a BMW and use that?

Im finding it hard to source the BMW part in the UK without having to pay a fortune for it.

If the auto vTPS is good I could get one of these in time as I know someone who scraps miatas and sells the parts.

I have already read the link. I tried searching for the 2 part numbers for the bosch TPS and I can find them.

But 1 site requires 50 to be bought at a time and the other has the part at a ridiculous price which isnt worth it. I tried to source the part at a few scrap yard as well with little luck.
I read on another post about the auto TPS been variable and an easy swap.

I tried to source one of these from my friend who I mentioned above and he hasnt had an auto for quite a while so no luck there.

I will find one it will just take me some time.

Im learning but its a steep learning curve.

I see these pop up in the classifieds a lot, usually railz posting them.

I have one on the shelf I was eventually going to use, but isn't doing anything now...

This tps201 or similar is actually pretty readily available and pretty cheap. I'm getting mine later today, I'll report back. But, it looks like you have to be a little careful in selecting one, as the one that's compatible from NAPA is apparently a factory sealed unit, making it harder to strip out the actual tps module. If the pic is accurate, the one I got from Autozone will actually just be the tps module with no cover.

Anyone have any thoughts why my original tb's shaft was short with a butterfly on it, which made THAT vtps incompatible with any of the other tpseseses normally used, like the bosch or tps201 unit?

If you do the auto vTPS, you need to replace the entire throttle body and then hack into the harness for the different plug...just fwiw.

I wish I could indentify what mine is. all i had to do with screw it in:

My car has been a turbo before in Japan before it was imported here as it has lots of turbo things done to it already. I will take mine off alittle later and have a look inside.

With alot of luck it may already have a vTPS.

Unfortunatly mine is just a standard TPS. I looked inside and it had an on/off style piece of metal with a piece between that causes a contact with either of the 2 contacts and thats all.

Ok so I just spent the last 2 hrs in the local scrap yards and found 2 automatic BMW cars. One was a 1990 520i the other a 3 series.

I took a gamble on the TPS as it was an automatic. It doesnt have bosch wrote on it but it does have the following:

1363-1721 456
BMW
made in w.germany.

Im assuming it must be a vTPS as it was automatic. But is the ellusive vTPS im after?

I can take pics if needed.
