Hello, I've used the search and couln't come up with any clear answers; so here's my question:

I'm installing MS1 V3.0 in my '99 and will be using NA igniter and coils.

I think I know how to wire this together with MS, can someone please check to make sure it's correct?

Igniter wiring
White: to coil pack
Brown/yellow: to MS, signal to fire coil (which coil??)
Blue: to +12V source (on at run and start)
Yellow/blue: *diagnostic, not used
Black/white: to coil pack
Black: to engine ground
Brown: to MS, signal to fire coil (which coil??)
Red: to coil pack

There have been three styles of NA ignition. Since you speak of "igniter and coils" separately, I'll assume you've got a '90-'93 system with a separate igniter. (which begs the question: why?)

Regarding brown and brown/yellow- this will depend on how you have the wheel decoder set up in software. You can wire it either way for now. If it doesn't start, then reverse 'em.

Yellow / Blue is the tach driver in the stock 1.6 system. How are you going to be driving the tach in your '99?

Black / White is a return to the ECU in the stock 1.6 system, which basically confirms to the ECU that the igniter obeyed its command to fire. You can leave this wire alone.

I don't know the year of the injector (wasn't specified on ebay), if figure i'ts a '90 - '93 given the wire colors.

I read a lot of posts that claimed that the '99 coils with integrated igniters were fragile, I didn't want to fry them and not be able to run the car until I got new ones.

It's a lot easier for me to run the stock coils though, is that a good idea?

Is there a big advantage w/ COP? I started reading the 56 page thread on it but couldn't find a difinitive answer.

stronger spark, never need wires, easy wiring; sure beats the 90-93 coils.

Agh, this will be the third coil that I've bought for this project!

I'll eventually go through all 56 pages of that thread, but what else aside from the COPs, and pigtails is needed to get this to work? Do I need another igniter or is it built in?

I just checked out your writeup, I can't resist; I'm buying the COPs tonight.

If I understand your writeup correctly, I don't need an ingiter if I'm running off of Megasquirt, just wire the COPs directly to MS right?

Yes they do have built-in igniters. They will charge when the trigger line goes to +5, and fire when the trigger goes to 0V. You can thus drive them from the MS using the exact same output circuits you would use with stock Miata coils.

And don't forget, you'll need to purchase or fabricate a bracket to hold them down. The ones being sold in This Thread are quite nice.

On the plus side, you should find easy buyers for your '99 and 1.6 ignition systems.
