Rev, you have the first miata i've ever seen with 4 thermocouples sticking out of the header. Cool stuff.

LunaticDriver 05-09-2007 10:10 AM

Shimmy so guess i'll be waitin for the mspnp with the baro correction then

SideDraft 05-09-2007 12:12 PM

barro correction, thermocouples, are these neccessary items? Daily driven in socal with future ITB plans would this be something I will need in the future?

EGT to get the perfect tune. Baro to keep the perfect tune all the time in varying conditions of altitude and whatnot.

Not unless you're competing in Pike's Peak (which we have had customers ask about on other systems). The baro correction is useful for driving if you have major changes in eleveation (like thousands of feet) before you shut off the engine. Thermocouples are not something most of our customers use.

Jim's not necessarily the average car guy though -- he's got more going on under that hood than most... he's a pretty hardcore DIYer I'd say.... Pretty sweet setup...

Sure - just turn ventilation the on, and switch to outside air ventilation (ie not cabin recirculation). Behold the magically expanding vinyl top! I usually get 1-2 kPa more in the cabin when the ventilation is on (tha LMA-3 which is in the cabin has a MAP sensor that is vented to the cabin air).

where directly i can order pnp when they release.

Ben 05-09-2007 05:41 PM

:dunno: can't tell you the last time I dove it with the soft top up.

castillejos, you need to see http://www.megasquirtpnp.com/
There is also a group buy in the classifieds section.

Thanks for kind words Jerry. Yeah, you could call me a DIY in the spirit, maybe I'll avoid doing things if I don't find them to be creative in nature. For example, I bought my MS assembled but I made the box and wiring myself, along with all the other neat stuff that required measuring, calculating, manufacturing, testing and back to "ye ol' drawing board".

My favourite mod thus far is my 9k, vertical needle tacho with my shift lights box (which as you might have guessed, are driven by the MS). Btw, I'm 6'3", so that shiftlight box sits EXACTLY under the odometer LCD - ie its not in the LOS between my eye and the odometer.

We'll have them available at DIYAutoTune.com on Friday, listed in the catalog for immediate shipping. There will also be units available through the Group Buy that Bill (MiataRoadster.com) is running-- you can save $50 that way if you're not in a big rush...

This is WAY off topic now but I drove a 1.6 NB the other day and I'm sure it had a very similar tacho. I remember because the needle was pointing directly down when I jumped in which I thought was kind of odd. If I remember correctly it also said "6 speed" on the tacho face. I'm sure it was the standard tacho, so maybe this is another good alternative?

Quick update guys-- the 11th is here and we've got units ready to ship on the site. There are 30+ ready to ship right now, and more going together every day--

LunaticDriver 05-11-2007 02:12 AM

I'll be gettin mine once we figure out the full auto baro thingy. The Knock add on would be nice too but I can always add that later with help.

FoundSoul 05-11-2007 09:58 AM

Here's a snapshot of a batch of MSPNP ECUs laying out on a table as the kits were coming together last night... oooohhh.... aahhhh....

http://www.diyautotune.com/images/pr...949_edited.jpg

BTW-- every single unit was tested on our car here-- by me actually. The mainboards were bench tested before final assembly, then after assembly they're put on our car and idled, rev'd, closed loop PWM idle is tested, and cooling fan control is tested. We stop short of doing donuts in the parking lot with each unit... it is tempting though...:skid:

Braineack 05-11-2007 10:21 AM

ill trade you for a built DIY one...

nice job!!!! now get Data Log Lab to support the datalogs.

Heheh... Ebay is your friend ;)

As for Data Log Lab.... we're already working on it... shouldn't be a big deal.

so which one on that table is mine...lol.

What's the story on the knock thingie in development? Should I buy the knocksense, or wait around for your product? Any projected, rough timeline?

FoundSoul 05-11-2007 11:17 AM

No real story on that yet-- Bottom line is I'd like to just resell the KnockSenseMS unit and be done with it, but the designer doesn't make enough off of it to do that profitably, nor can he make them in large quantity... so that said we'll look into designing a solution that we can offer but we're not there yet so for now I'd go with the KnockSenseMS. Boris is a good guy and I'd really like to support him, everyone I know of has had good luck with his product when properly dialed in...

Oh yeah-- your MSPNP is on the middle row, third from the left-- ;)

Thanks, I'll order knocksense now then.

Is the IAT sensor the only part of the install that will require modification? I'm thinking about installing this in my hotel parking lot, but don't have a drill handy.

I was thinking about installing this weekend, but I don't really want to tune off a narrow band.

shuiend 05-11-2007 11:29 AM

If you are running NA Hustler you should not have to tune at all. They should have a basemap that is close to perfect if not perfect.

yeah, my engine is totally stock. Since I'm living out of a hotel...how much can I get a timing light for? I think that's the only thing I'll need other than my "track day tool bag." How many people have installed stand alone engine management in a hotel parking lot?

Atlanta93LE 05-11-2007 11:55 AM

A cheap-o timing light (that works fine) is available at HF for ~$12.99. It's worked for me on several occasions.

I was asked by someone in the UK is I thought DLL was worth porting to work with MS

IMO MT and MLV are superior (bar the power estimation) DLL has a really clunky interface IMO.

I'd agree MegaLogViewer is really powerful and all you need, but this is the second time I've had someone ask about DLL, and it shouldn't be that hard...

Ben-- you picked that up like an hour ago-- it's not in the car YET? ;)

hustler 05-11-2007 01:56 PM

hey matt or foundsoul,
the knocksense guy wanted to know what board and software for the kit. What do I tell him? I guess "plug n play" doesn't mean anything to him.

Thank

What does DIY autotune think about putting a resistor on the LC1 analog out like the innovate guys say to? How has it been dealt with on the PnP?

Yep-- as Ben said-- MS1 Extra

If you order one an LC1 along with your MSPNP, you shouldn't need a resistor - it's only the older ones in the green and white boxes that ever needed this, and even then this was to protect against bad grounding. The new ones in the "Thunderstorm" blue/black box should not need the resistor.

Ben 05-11-2007 06:39 PM

In case you didn't catch it earlier, I picked my MSPNP up from Jerry @ DIY earlier today. Along with the MS unit itself, I also received the software disk (which is self loading and well done), a tuning cable that looks like s-video on one end and a db serial cable on the other, an intake temp sensor and bung kit, a 5.5' length of vac hose (looks like it only needs 4-4.5'), and a vac T. Jerry also gave me a MAP signal filter to help clean up the signal because I elected to get the 4 bar sensor in place of the standard 2.5 bar sensor.

Installation:
pull STSIGN fuse--30 seconds
expose & remove the oem ecu--4 minutes
run vac hose through firewall--15 minutes (a 2nd person helping is nice)
install ecu plugs, vac hose, and serial tuning cable into MS--1 minute
reinstall ecu cover plate, carpet, and sill panel--4 minutes
total time: appx 25 minutes
difficulty: easy, except running the MAP signal line through the firewall. Though not technically difficult, it's frustrating. Having a second person would make it less painful (one person pushing from the engine side, the other person under the dash looking for the hose and pulling it through). I used an opened wire coathanger and very tightly taped the hose to the hanger and pushed it into the hole in the firewall. Then I used 2 flat head screwdrivers to prod the hose & hanger through. The hose comes through high up under the dash on the pass side towards the side of the car.

Jerry was super cool and offered phone and web based tech support.

Pointers:
*I had to lower the transmission speed of the serial connection to 9600 from its default 11500 to establish communication between the laptop and MS
*The supplied documentation is in word format. So you'll need word, openoffice, or equivalent.

timk 05-11-2007 07:40 PM

Just FYI, MS1 works at 9600 and MS2 at 115200. :)
