Question MS2 and internal vs. external ignitors

I'm switching from single coil to wasted spark (DSM coil packs) and I have become indecisive about how to drive the coils.

My current setup used the old VB921 internal ignitor, and a single MSD blaster II coil. Worked fine... never had any issues, at least none that I noticed.

The guy who is adding the second spark output for me (and some other functions) is recommending that I go with an external ignitor (like the stock DSM unit) instead of adding a second internal direct-fire ignitor. He is citing potential issues with additional heat and noise within the MS unit.

I know the later miata coils have built in ignitors, so most of you guys are probably using those... but does anyone have experience running wasted spark with internal ignitors? Any issues from noise or heat?

Thanks

talk to alta_racer. I built a MS unit for him using the Bosch High Output Drivers and he's running Neon coils with no ignitor.

thats what we'd be using, the bosch BIP373 for both outputs since the VB921 is discontinued. I'll send him a PM, thanks!

If you want a really slick solution, I can probably supply you with an external ignitor box with either BIP373 modules (10a), or a different module that we have been experimenting with (20a). If that's something you're interested in, shoot me an email and I'll get you a price: websales@diyautotune.com

i think i'll likely stick with the BIP373 internals, or the stock DSM ignitor (it sort of comes along with the coil packs anyway, was just going to toss it). just need to make up my mind..

thanks for the offer though

I would probably go for the DSM ignitor.

The setup Scott did for me has given no issues at all running the MSD/Neon coilpack. I have about 1000 miles logged, pulls clean to 8000 rpm. I have been trying to make an MSD DIS2 work, and it does but it has issues. I dont recall the dwell setting, but I can get that if you need it.

HTH

Ron

Let me know if I can help out more
