Default ms2pnp --no usb connect??

I am completely computer illiterate, and have no business tuning a car through one, however this car does not have carburetors so here I am.

many problems have arisen durring my initial interactions with tuner studio, and they are:

what firmware should I be using, I get a few options

megasquirt2.ini
microsquirt.ini
microsquirt-module.ini
mspnp2.ini

when I bluff (because i dont actually know what to enter) my way through the set up chart and get to the gauge cluster, it just says "not detected" or something like that.

why is it not detecting through the usb connection that my ms2pnp came with?

I have read the startup write up here in the ms section, but It seems like a great "refresher course" for someone who already has worked with this. Then i search around here a little more and see threads and comments about other files that i need to download for coolant temps and things like that. I just feel like a total moron tapping away as if i know what to do..
Thanks, and I will need much more support Im sure.

Is it a MSPNP bought from DIYAuyotune? Or an MS built by someone?

Assuming you have a unit that's configured to your car, and also assuming you have the Serial to USB connection, and you have made sure that's working, than this; https://www.miataturbo.net/megasquir...t-guide-40159/ is pretty straightforward.

I followed those directions a few times. All I get is the " not connected". The ms came with a cord and I just assumed it was correct. Its a small trapezoid shape one (db9?), to USB. Not the same one that the accessories connect to, which is also trapezoidal but a little larger(15 pin?).
My concern is that I do not have the correct firmware installed. Like I said, four options come up when I choose the manual install and they all sound like they could work. Hahahaba.

The first thing you should do is figure out exactly what type of ECU you have. The only thing that's clear is you do NOT have a MSPNP.

Megasquirt Product Comparison
If you buy a used MegaSquirt

Once you've identified what ECU you have, you should then see its manual. We also have a TunerStudio setup guide on our site:

Thanks for leading me on how to identify my computer. So I took it apart and the motherboard is blue and says DIY AUTOTUNE MSPNP.
MORE COMING.....

OK now I am getting somewhere. Looks like I have a PNP with a microsquirt module. I guess there are a few different forms of the pnp.

What you have is a DIYPNP:

MegaSquirt Plug-N-Play EMS Kit | DIY Engine Management System Kits | DIYPNP

What happens if you try running the Port Check program?

Thanks for the identification. I'm not sure about the port check. I was just following the write up that said not to worry about it. I'll try it tonight if this frozen rain let's up a bit.

port check comes back good.

Still not getting connection. I did have some connectivity at one point when I used COM4, but then got an error message that said I was trying to use the wrong firmware. I went back to the diy help page and was attempting to just start all over. I used the "quick guide" to install ms2/extra 3.3x.
I used the correct loader like instructions said.
Entered some default info and the next thing I know, it said it had re-flashed the ecu. Now I can no longer get a connection when trying to "test port".
From the very beginning, my screen looks slightly different than all of the instructions and how to's that I find both here and online. I never have seen the option when starting a new project to choose between mega or microsquirt.
Soo lost....

Not grey if you open a project..
No connection found in any configuration.

*Device manager detects the serial to USB connection and says its good on com 4.
*Try project set up again on com 4, 115 baud rate. microsquirt, micro module, and megasquirt (just to see)
*No connection.
*firmware loader installed

Before I installed the firmware loader, I finally was able to get some sort of a detection. It said that i had the wrong firmware (as I posted above).
After loader install I am back at square -1 or -2.

I have read and followed many different trouble shoot and install methods.

Is all of this really worth the gains on a non turbo car? The more reading I do while trying to just get this thing to communicate with my PC, the more I start to think that I am in wayyyy over my head.

Sound of head hitting keyboard.

Thanks Matt Cramer! Got it all sorted out. I had an incorrect driver installed on my PC. Also found that for whatever reason, I had to set up a project in TS, set com4, then go to settings and enter com 4 again, then run the port check.

Thanks again.
