Default Timing keeping me from starting?

I've been battling with megasquirt trying to get it to start.
Worked at it all day Saturday. I was cranking so much I had to pull the battery out of the Land Rover.

Anyways... My base timing with the stock ecu was set at 14 degrees. Could an extreme difference between that and what Megasquirt is made to believe make it harder to get it running?

Well, give us some more info here. Are you running MS standalone, fuel and spark, only spark? Does it run fine with MS doing fuel but not when MS does spark?

Let's see an MSQ.

FWIW, base (idle) timing and cranking timing are not the same. I believe my cranking advance is 18°. (It's a separate entry in "Spark Settings")

Ahh you gotta be kidding me... Didn't receive any notification emails... so you'll have to settle with an uber-late response.

It's a Braineack pnp.(awesome btw) Running piggyback. 305cc injectors.
I don't think I can allow MS control of only spark or only fuel.
It runs if I hook the stock ecu up.

I see my cranking advance is running at 17 degrees.

I'll see what I can do to get the .msq posted up.

I bring you....

The way it cranks, "1 2 3 stop, 1 2 3 stop" is why I'm wondering if it's timing. Also the nice thumps when it stops is a little combustion in the intake manifold when I'm holding the gas pedal down. It does try to start at 7 seconds.

try switching the plugs on the coilpacks, I bet it fixes it.

Ok a quick swap of the wires got it running roughly but it dies quickly. It still sounds off though. I'll post a video once the battery has had some time to charge.

You sir, are a genius.

While it's charging pull the plugs and clean them up, they're probably fouled out. While they're out, unplug the coilpacks and spin the motor over with the pedal on the floor (clear flood mode) to get most of the raw gasoline out. Then put it all back together and see what happens.

Something to note is that with the plugs how they are in this vid, the stock ecu won't run, but with the plugs how they should be according to the manual, stock ecu runs but MS won't.

Sounds like I've got some hot cams :P

Cleaned and cleared the engine. Still the same. While it's running, I can pull the plug off cylinder 1 and notice no difference in idle quality. All plugs are sparking.

I pulled spark plug number 1 and it ran like stock -1 cylinder. This has got to mean something. It idled right up to 2000rpm fast idle till I shut it off.

I hope you didn't pull that wire off #1 while it was running. You have to ground the plug wire or you can burn up your coil or igniter.

I would try putting in NEW plugs or perhaps switching say plugs 1 and 3 and see if the problem moves to cylinder 3. Also, are you sure it's not running on 2 cylinders?

Also, open megatune, click basic setup/ engine characteristics. Then see if bank 2 is set on.

Right, I forgot about that. Same ignition as my Eclipse.

Swapped spark plugs 1 and 3, same thing.
Swapped spark plug WIRES 1 and 3, still the same.
And actually, it seems that it IS only running on cylinders 2 and 4.

Verify your getting spark on all 4 cylinders. I know you said you are, but check again. Are the plugs on 1 and 3 wet with fuel? Dry? Try running it and then pulling plugs 1 and 2. IS 1 warm and 2 hot a hell? If your getting spark on all 4 your likely not getting fuel on 1&3. Did you check the injector settings I noted above?

I haven't found the injector settings you are talking about. I don't even have a basic setup tab. All plugs are dry. This is leaning towards fuel problems now...
