Default Problems (Still) with the MSNS running very rough.

Hey guys, its been a while. Ive been gone way too long, was in Japan for about a month. Anyway, i just got back and continued to diagnose the problem on the miata.

Anyway, my car is a 1999 NB, small GT2554R turbo with 440cc RC injectors, AEM UEGO WB02.. etc etc.

It take sit a bit long to start the car from cold start, but once its warm, it fires less than a second. Im sure i can adjust this with the crank settings.

But the main problem im having is that after it has started, it is definately misfiring or running one 2-3 cylinders. I am getting a CEL 0301 (flashing) signifying a misfire in cylinder one. Despite that fact, i used a timing light to check the timing anyway, and i cant even get a steady flashing light on my spark plugs. Its like theres not enough charge for the timing light to sense the firing. I tried the timing light on my other car - no problem, works fine.
The strange thing is that when the car is first started and going through warm up, i try the timing light and i get very good timing readings, then the timing light starts to seem to "miss" firing every couple of times in a few seconds. Then when its fully warmed up, it doesnt even flash at all. I tried checking the other spark plug wires, and they dont get a constant light flash either.

I tried looking through the settings on the MS through megatune, but i still cant pinpoint the exact problem of the misfiring problem. I had stock coilpacks on at first. Seeing that the problem cold have been the stock coilpacks themselves (since 99-00 coilpacks have problems with blowing up) i switched over to COP set up to see if that would solve the problem.
Everything was wired up fine, the car fired right up, but the problem still exists.

This is where im stumped. I double checked the wiring on my harness countless times to make sure i didnt mess any wirings up or any bridged connections, and everything checks out. Could it be a problem with the MS itself, something related to ignition on teh board itself?

I dont care about my car being able to boost high or what not, i just want it running now. its been down since august, last year.

EDIT: i was going to put my MSQ up, but i dont have it at the moment. Ill post it as soon as a i get a chance to retrieve it.

were you trying to read spark with the timing light off the the wires going into the COPs or did you pull the coils and add a traditional plug wire inbetween?

The trigger wires are far too low of a current for an inductive meter to pick up.

you know, that's also possible. I noticed that my timing light wasn't firing a while back, thought it was do to spark. Found out later than I had two channels on my sequential injection backwards. Once I fixed the fuel problem causing the misfire, the timing light never skipped a beat.

So a misfire is a misfire, and apparently the timing light will skip whether it's fuel or spark related.

are you getting any spark on 2-3? using a 90-97 CAS? correct spark mods?

Here are the pictures of his board. Nothing jumps out at me. Except the wire going to the boot hole instead of 5v. He said he moved that since the pictures were taken, so that has been fixed.
EDIT: Well, they're huge mongous photos it appears, atleast you'll get a close look.

bad gas huh? never thought of that.

As for the COPS, i stuck a traditional spark plug wire to the end of the cop in order to test the spark because the spark is to far down on the COP.

the car is using a 94-97 CAS, retrofitted.

when i first start the car, i great a nice good, timing light reading. but as soon as it starts to warm up, it starts to go bleak and fires only once every couple of seconds or minutes.

could the injectors not firing be the problem?? injectors are cleaned through witch hunter, RC 440cc's. they are perfect. i thought it was wiring on the injectors too, so i took a look at them as well. everything seems intact, no cold solder points - i even resoldered the wires to make sure they were good.

could it be a cold solder joint on the MS itself?
i dont have any oscilloscopes or the way to test out anything.

is anyone willing to test my MS on their car? i would be willing to pay for shipping bothways just to test. this is getting on my nerves

ill call my buddy over tomorrow to check spark again.
thanks for the help guys

the same thing happened on my last build....turns out there was just a very tiny flux creating a circuit between a resistor on the spark mod. he noticed the one LED was slightly dimmer than the rest and had a weak spark on 2-3.

Sure. I'll pm you my address. You've built it the same as mine for the most part so i don't mind trying it out.

wow, what litle things could go wrong with soldering.

soldering i can do... but diagnostics on electrical components like that are out of my league.
