I'm getting somewhat frustrated, so hopefully the latest glitch is just a product of a simple misunderstanding on my part.

Here's what happens. No matter how much I increase the ASE, my wideband still reads 15.x for the first second or two after the car starts, before settling down to 11-12 where it should be.

That made me think the problem is a too-low fixed MAP setting. But when I increased that, it must've been too much because startup was suddenly very rough.

So what do I need to adjust? Or could there be something else causing the wideband to be slow to react when started?

 

Are you sure you let your WB-O2 enough time to warm up? Until its fully warmed up it gives a reading of close to 14.7 anyway...

(Seriously, I didn't know it needs time to warmup. If true, that explains what's happening.)

 

RTFM'd just now. It states: "Initial Warm-up Time: Less than 20 seconds" .... who knew? (Not me!)

So, from now on, am I supposed to start the electricity, wait a few seconds, and then start the car? Is that what everyone does? Or just start it normally and ignore the lean AFR reading that appears for the first few seconds? Or, perhaps extend the number of seconds that it runs at fixed MAP before idle?

I'm shooting in the dark, so good advice is welcome...

 

I have mine wired to the Meter fuse, which is supposed to be hot when cranking too. It always shuts off and turns back on when cranking. Ignore the steady reading you get when it first fires up.

 

Now I have to wonder what else I don't know!

For example: if the reading can't be trusted during a cold start, then how are we supposed to know if the start is lean / rich / just right?

 

Does it fire up, not oscillate, and run smoothly? If so, stop worrying about it. :P

Nope. Just start the bitch up. Do you really care about having inaccurate readings for the first few seconds of engine operation? Speaking only for myself, I'm typically not making 13+ PSI of boost for at least 20 seconds after the engine is started.


How did you know on the stock ECU? You didn't. You just took it on faith that the engineers at Mazda had set it up correctly. So do the same. If you want, let it warm up before you start it a few times and observe / correct if necessary. Then get over it.

It takes time for the exhaust to reach the sensor man.

Even if you let it warm up and then start the car, its 1...2..... then you get readings.

 

I think we can safely conclude I didn't know that!
