Default FM's aluminum bypass valve annoying - replacement?

I have the older one, just a simple piston and it sounds annoyingly loud and gobbles. I've greased the piston with no help. I wonder if it's crappy quality is causing a vacuum leak and contributing to my poor idle?

I'm thinking of going with an inexpensive and quiet Bosch or one of these on BEGi's website http://www.bellengineering.net/Pages...ts_valves.html

Will those be stealthy quiet?

If you recirc them then they will be quiet. Otherwise, they sound like you are opening a big bottle of coke

I had the same problem with my first BOV, also one of the FM aluminum piston types.

I replaced it with a Chinese knockoff of a Greddy Type RS from eBay. Quiet-ish, and dead reliable.

The Bosch unit on Bell's website, if recirculated, will be the ultimate in stealth.

Do ya'll happen to know if the fittings are the same diameter or close enough? It's about 1-3/8".

Yeah, those custom BOVs were not our finest hour. However, they were designed to use the same fitting sizes and locations as the inexpensive Mitsubishi unit so you can easily swap them out.

We sell that one for $52.95, by the way.

Not sure the whole production history on this unit, but it was being closed out as a DOTD almost exactly two years ago, which is when I bought mine.

My understanding is that the GFB unit they sell now is supposedly pretty reliable, and of course the OEM Mitsu valves they sell are gonna be fine.

Installed the 3000GT valve last night and love it. Even with an open element filter it's stealthy quiet. Just a muffle sneeze at high RPM shifts.

It's waaay stiffer than the old FM piece.

I changed from the FM turkey gobbler to the Mitsu piece and it seems to work well and no funny noises from under the hood. 1st post.

Hmmm, I thought that was the "new" one, the one you have pictured there, Joe.

I have the one from before that, similar, it's a piston, with an adjustable preload (yay!). It is a two stage deal, with a recirc for light duty, and a vent-to-atmosphere for hard lifts.

I really love it, actually. It's easy enough to keep quiet, but has a nice sound when you blow some air through it. People who know what it is can't miss it, and people who don't won't notice. It doesn't sound restrictive, and it moves a lot of air.


My guess is the reason it went away was in the earlier kits, the valve was mounted in a different orientation, the vent to atmosphere port basically blowing straight up (huge grease spot under my hood is testament to that). It would jam up with grease, and need regular cleaning/lubing. You could do it by blowing cleaner into the secondary blow off port, but it was easy to blow that cleaner back into your eyes if the motor was running. :-)

Anyway, with the (newly fixed) intake kit, the valve mounts facing down, and I think the contaminants all collect at the bottom and blow out of the system. Maybe that's not what does it, but whatever doe, it hasn't needed cleaning since I put it on the car, compared to every month or so before.

It was. Then about two years ago it was replaced with the new new one, and became the old new one. (or the new old one, in place of the old old one.)

FM's current offering is a valve made by GFB, available in either VTA or recirc. Looks like this:

They're supposedly pretty good. If nothing else, you gotta love a manufacturer who names one of their products the Bovus Maximus. Still, my $50 (shipped) knock-off Greddy RS has been working nicely for the past 1.5 years.

Looks like the recirc one flows less.

I haven't quite yet figured out what makes some bad and some good....

I have the Old old one and love it. Just spray the piston with a little silicone every 10K miles or so and it is going strong for 60K

Betcha the ebay knock off ones are worse....if it didnt flutter, it leaked.

Myself, I of course went with a genuine greddy type-s cause im baller.
