it's pretty cheap and claims it has an actual garrett turbo. i guess that's a one up from a chinacharger. i've just never heard of this kit. the least expensive and basic kit i've seen was the greddy kit that most people tell me to stay away from and just save for a begi/fm kit.

does anyone have any info on this? reliability wise. actually working wise.

I would say stay away from that...you can piece together a diy kit with quality parts for less than that. I also highly doubt it's made to fit. It looks like a bunch of couplings and random parts that you will have a blast trying to make fit.
Don't make a mistake.

can a quality diy kit really be acquired with a budget sub 2k? i would assume this would be without any sort of tuning/fuel management. i mean a mspnp is like $800 alone no?

i mean granted i found an inexpensive turbo, a manifold from begi, dp from somewhere, wideband and the other bits i might be able to stay under 2k. but for some reason i always think i need something else when i just about think i have everything on a list.

I would say yes, this can be done.

First I'd buy this:
https://www.miataturbo.net/miata-parts-sale-trade-5/ms-1-pcb-3-0-assembled-unit-%24200-shipped-63173/
That leaves you with $1800 for a wideband, I/C, piping, my turbo, mani, DP, boost gauge, BOV, Filter, misc lines for oil and coolant, and you're golden...

goal is a very streetable ~160. from my understanding it might be a slightly higher psi than a "standard" 8psi but seems rather attainable with the appropriate parts.

when you say "my turbo" are you implying you have one for sale or just saying that i'd be happy with the one you are currently running?

If you think you might be missing something, just read over the FAQ or post up a sanity check. We'll straighten you out.

As for kits (did someone say Greddy? lol) if I had it to do over again I might go with the Greddy again, TBQH. But - only because this was the first car I'd ever turbocharged, and because you'll end up replacing everything in the kit eventually. This means you get twice the practice...

Who says 8 psi is standard?

I think you'll eventually blow right past 8 psi and 160hp. The boost bug has a powerful bite.

Dave, that kit is a standard eBay kit. I've seen the same stock photo used under many different names. Stay away.

PM a user on this board named Reverant. He makes and sells custom Megasquirts to order. All said and done, even if you buy somebody's used Megasquirt/wideband/injectors... you're still going to pay between $600-$800 just for engine management. You can do this for less, but mucking around with bandaids is counter-productive in the long run.

Staying within your budget is easy if you'll give yourself more time. Don't be in a hurry to have boost tomorrow.

Get yourself a Megasquirt now and learn to tune... and buy pieces/parts in the classifieds over the next 6-8 months, and do your build as a Christmas present.

The Turbo Specialites kit is not any kit offered on ebay. It's not the greatest kit in the world, but it's bounds ahead of any ebay "kit"

UrbanSoot bought one a few years back, had an issue with the trubo size they gave him, ended up being very small...where they IIRC swapped it with a typical t25 size eventually.

But the mainfold is actually kinda nice...

a lot of beginner threads on mt.net and m.net and starter kits tuned for 8 psi made me put the quotes and the word standard. i guess i should have made some sort of chart of general psi and hp numbers? but yeah i'm looking for some get up and go and impressing my mother who makes fun of my 30mpg altoid tin of a car. her words not mine haha. can't disagree with the 30 mpg though

I'm implying that mine is for sale and you should buy it cause it will be perfect for your budget and goals and it's a genuine Garrett.

Maybe my turbo isn't for you...my adjustable wastegate is only set for 7psi.

just finished reading the thread. pics didn't work anymore but soot found out at the end that the Garrett turbo was in fact not a Garrett and so he tried to get a refund by filing with the BBB about it. false advertising i guess.

at first he made it sound like that mani and turbo were the only upsides to the kit but then after 4 pages the turbo ended up possible being a random t20. so i guess that roughly translates into.. the $1800 kit is only good for the manifold. doesn't really make much sense, if any at all, to buy it then since a quality begi manifold is ~$400. myth busted?

i wish i had found that thread earlier but i thought the kit was called a tsi kit and so i obviously came up with hits on turn signal intakes/inductors when i was searching

Why even risk it when a quality begi kit costs 2k that will for sure fit right and you will get what you pay for? Thats only 250 bucks more...
