The one question I have brought up a couple of different times that really makes my vag itch has not been addressed. That is, if you were dealing with a much more expensive, lets say Oh I don't know, an engine that was 5k to replace. Would you still take the short cut and tap the pan in the car, or would you pull it in order to ensure that the pan was debris free?
If I could afford car with a $5K engine as easily as I afforded my miata, I wouldn't give a **** and I would tap the ****** in the *** while it was still strapped in good and tight in the engine bay where it belongs.
Now before you ask, if the engine was $50K would I remove it? No, I would pay my butler to pay my driver to take the car to the caviar fortress and have a golden ***** generator swapped out for the stock exhaust???
In all eriossnous, what would a shaving really do to an engine, if one were say, suspended in the oil and made it through the filters? Thinking about it, I guess it could gouge out the bearings? What else?

I get what he is trying to say, But a paint scratch is hardly on par with what is being discussed. The one question I have brought up a couple of different times has not been addressed. Would you still take the short cut and tap the pan in the car, or would you pull it in order to ensure that the pan was debris free? The point is that it is just not a good idea to run around with crap in the oil pan, even if there is a strainer on the pump and a filter in the system.
I really don't get why the majority here think I am nuts to take the time to pull the engine for this step. To me it is common sense, to ensure the pan is clean, and that flushing won't ensure....we have been down this bumpy road 100X already no sense in beating a dead horse.
Another option that has not been discussed is suspending the engine, dropping the k-member then dropping the pan. I replaced an oil pan and a k-member on a friends car this way once. It was quick off but a little tricky to line back up.

What the f**k is your problem a**hole. If you are going to quote what I said, then quote it. Don't be a little bitch a** piece of s**t and edit my quote. Yeah you are under my skin f**k head. I never attacked anyone with my post until you were a dick to me. Then it was only you I had a problem with. I have shown respect to the others on this board. I understand that there is some ribbing that goes on here. But, when you change the body of a members text when you quote it. You go to far
I know what kind of hack wrench you are based on the problems you have had with your car. I will let my work stand on its own merit.
As for the OP, look at the work FAEFLORA has done on his car, then look at the work I have done on mine. Then ask yourself which opinion you trust.

LOL relax bro. Fleofora talks **** often, don't let it drive you foaming at the mouth mad. Roll with the punches
Is pulling the pan to properly weld up a solid return into the pan the best way?
You betcha.
Is tapping it on the car just as effective though not as solid? Yup.
I did both:
On my 1st setup I had it tapped the el cheapo way and it was ghetto fabulous and ugly, but worked for over a year without a single problem.
2nd time around I had the engine out to build it and did it PROPERLY while I was down there. Welded a tube into the pan so its almost as if its stock.
Much happier and have more peace of mind with the PROPER way but the alternative also works.
Just my .02

You all want to know what THE correct answer is to this debate?
Really want to know?
Buy a ******* oil pan for a damn Mazdaspeed Miata. No modification to be done, no drill, no tapping...just a nice cast-in oil return. Your method of installation my vary. Done.
/discussion
For the record. FM installed the original turbo kit in my car, so whatever way they did it has been trouble free for about 5 years.

Well if wishes were horses we'd all be eating steak.
If I could afford car with a $5K engine as easily as I afforded my miata, I wouldn't give a **** and I would tap the ****** in the *** while it was still strapped in good and tight in the engine bay where it belongs.

Seriously, without purposely introducing shavings past the strainer into the oil pump gear I am not sure what would happen. I imagine worse case a cold fused bump on one of the oil pump gears leading to early failure. Possibly a piece getting into the oil relief valve in the pump causing the check valve to remain partially open, thus reducing working oil pressure.
And finally...Nothing at all. As 18 PSI mentioned, after his pan was removed and the return line was welded into the pan, he had more piece of mind. He also states that he ran a pan that was taped while on the engine without incident.
I think my analness comes from my profession as a nurse. I don't like leaving things to chance if I can help it. Does this attitude cost me time and money? Yes it does, but for me personally, it is worth it. I can be kind of obsessive at times. Never meant to come off like a douche, but after reviewing my posts in this thread it certainly appears that I did.

Every engine I have every disasembled (blown up or not) has had at least a teaspoon of random **** in the pan, metal shavings, casting sand, whatever. A couple extra shavings are not going to hurt.

Another newb jumping in... I imagine there's a lotta ppl doing it the way I'm doing it, and it just makes sense to pull the engine: bought a 94 miata off craigslist w/ 160k miles. it has leaks, almost everything is leaking, awesome compression tho. So what am I gonna do? pull the damn motor because I wanna put a clutch in and do the rear main seal, along w/ the timing belt and water pump, front crank seal, CAS o ring, not too mention coolant reroute.... It may not save enough time to justify pulling the motor, but damn... all this **** probably needs to be done on a lot of cars, and why not do it all at once and know that you've got a healthy starting place, theres enough things that can go wrong w/ a turbo setup already.
