FWIW, I tried this out for the first time last month and it works pretty well. As mentioned, the line on Google maps is not particularly accurate with the internal GPS. I just picked up a 10Hz Qstarz unit, so I'll see how that does in two weeks.
In case anyone else buys one of the 10Hz Qstarz units, I had some trouble pairing it with my Droid 2. It looked like it wasn't compatible for a minute there, but I realized that even though the Android OS says the device is not connected, if you go into the Trackaroo app the unit pairs right up, and it can start pulling GPS data at the full 10Hz, so it looks to be working right. Not sure why the OS won't recognize it, though...

Not sure why this happened, maybe the battery was starting to run down on the qstarz? How long have you been able to run yours at 5/10 Hz?

TrackHQ and supermiata have a thread on this. Apparently it's very accurate when compared to an AMB for lap times, and the data is good. I'm looking forward to picking up an android phone and using this rather than buying something like Traqmate.

So after a recent weekend of NASA Time Trial and Texas Miata Challenge racing I am going to upgrade TrackMaster to a definite win.
Hardware used:
- HTC Evo with Android OS, and an extended life battery.
- Qstarz 5Hz bluetooth GPS non-logging.
Software used:
- TrackMaster by Trackaroo plus their bluetooth GPS utility (forget the name, check their web site)
- Google Earth
What I did. I am not going to cover every little detail. There is more information on what to do at the Trackaroo web site so go there for more details.
1. Open up Google Earth and find the track you will be racing on. In this case it was MSRC.
2. Create points on the track (right on the satellite map) for where you want the splits to be.
3. Export this to a KMZ file and transfer/e-mail that file to your Android phone.
4. Open up TrackMaster (on your phone) and import the KMZ file.
5. Configure the TrackMaster settings for road racing. For example, I set it to start logging (automatically) after I crossed the first split. I also set it to stop logging after 30 minutes (TT sessions are ~ 20 minutes). These are both great settings.
6. Mount the phone in your car wherever you like.
7. Put the Qstarz GPS somewhere in the car where it can receive satellite signals.
8. Link the phone and the GPS together. After you do this the first time they will automatically re-link even if you remove the phone from the car.
9. Tell TrackMaster to start the session.
10. Go racing.
11. When you get back from your session, pull up your session and check out your data. Graphs, sat map overlays, etc. etc.
12. Repeat 9-12 as needed.
There is one particular feature with TrackMaster that was a major win for me. I'll let you all discover that one for yourself.
The only issues I had were the following:
1. The TrackMaster did not log one of my sessions. But that was only because the Qstarz battery had died. Once I recharged the Qstarz all was well again.
2. I did not get good g-load data but I believe that was because I did not have the phone well mounted. I will be improving the mount for next time.

it's called trackmaster. traqmate is the $700-1000 setup. lol... i need a new phone that can link to the qstarz, mytouch won't. mine worked great the first 6 events i used it, now it says "gps interference detected" and all the info is corrupt. well, one time it did work on the front straight at tws, so the lap times were correct compared to my amb transponder. developer said it was my phone. the g readings won't be right. never have, he's tried to adjust them, but never was right. there is a ton of other features though. i use a cell phone holder to have the logging screen at eye level, i glance at it and if it's green i went faster in that sector, or lap, red and it means i went slower. can't wait to get another phone so i can use it again.

Can I run this on a G1 t Mobile phone? Is it possible to get a wired GPS to work for this?
Do you have to set the start/finish on each sessions?
How do I get the app if I currently use an iPhone on ATT? Can I swap sim cards and DL the Trackmaster app?
