That's crazy advice. The best thing to do is to spot them pulling into the pits, haul *** to get on their bumper, follow them to their pit spot, slam the brakes on (making sure to lock them up or engage ABS), jump out of your car while it is still running, leaving your door open, and just start yelling like a madman. Guaranteed to catch them off guard and get their attention! Also, don't give them time to retort. Jump back in your car and do a huge burnout pulling away (or as best as a burnout as your little girly car and do).

And they must be orange.
Invariably an experienced and highly competent driver will give no trouble when asked to do a check ride with a new organization and the asshat will make a big deal about why it isn't necessary. I've been present for so many of the "I don't need an instructor or even a check ride" arguments from people at trackdays that end up being the very ones to wreck or cause trouble. Beware of the guy who knows too much to take any instruction from anyone.
Your buddy reminded me of this commercial about the kid's first soccer game.

For the first session, those in the beginner group do a slalom and a braking exercise, that's what the cones are for. Intermediate and advanced groups just drive past. Usually the cones are placed well off the line so they're not a problem for drivers that know the track.
Glad your car went through that situation and didn't get hit!
I just watched the video on my phone with the sound off, I thought he lost oil pressure or some other failure at 1:20. Scary stuff...
Seriously though, even not knowing anything at all about racing, if your getting shown black flags and nobody else is, that would be a good time to pit. He had to be scared, any person who has the slightest bit of sanity would be scared in those situations
