New FP miata

On the helmet issue, I use a bell gtx 2 helmet made for open cockpit / karting GTX.2 | Racing Helmets | Bell Racing USA . Always use earplugs with open cockpit, same rule as motorcycles.

I think these pics offer a pretty good comparison of the old cage and the new one. Also in the last pic if you look closely you can see some of the aero features of my new helmet, it is a Simpson Speedway Shark it has eliminated the buffeting that I was experiencing with my old helmet. You can also see the difference in the old windshield and my new one. The new one is much easier to see over, in addition to being lower profile.
The transmission is made by Quaife, it is based on the Ford Seirra, there were adapter plates fabbed to mate it to a miata bell housing and engine.

^^^Yep, was working on aero for the Runoffs, In the works are 13" wheels for next season, I know I will have a slightly smaller footprint, but I am hopping that keeping suspension geometry unchanged and lowering the car will improve handling. Especially in long sweepers like the carousel at RA.

This is what I found after dropping the transmission. Broken flex plate, and a severely cracked bell housing. I decided that the bell housing could not be salvaged as the left upper ear was almost completely broken off and the hole for the location dowel was cracked and oblong.
The original bell housing was a 6 speed, I have a good 6 speed at home but decided that I didn't want to salvage the bell housing off a good 6 speed. So I made a call to a friend that has several 5 speed cases laying around and picked up a bell housing from him.
Prep work, I cant tell you how nice it is to have a friend with a bridgeport in his shop. Getting the bell housing to the right depth was a piece of cake.
After cutting the old bell housing off I took a couple of thousandths off of the plate in order to clean up all the old weld. I compensated for the loss of depth by leaving the bell housing 2 thousandths taller.
In order to index the transmission and bell housing I installed a clutch on an old block and crank. Then bolted the bell housing to the block and stabbed the transmission. The bell housing was the tacked to the adapter plate, and everything pulled apart for final welding.
Here are some pics.

I knew the flexplate was broken, I discovered it when I got home from the track and pulled the starter. I thought that I would document the bell housing work that was done. Quaife offers a miata bell housing but it is about $ 700 and I doubt that it would have put the transmission back in the same orientation that my current one off bell housing does.
After installing the transmission, I am going to work on getting the new electromotive installed and working. I plan on running new injectors too, I am thinking about DeatschWerks.

I have na ems but not sure I want to run that big of an injector, on top of which from what I understand ID's like big pressures. Think I will take a look at FiC, what is it you don't like about DW's?
