Run more than 1 wing at different heights to ensure you dont miss out.

I'm surprised no one has made a dirt track style wing on the miatas yet.

I don't see how the Bumper mount could be made SCCA legal. No part of the wing or mount can stick aft of the rear bumper. (note: I also intend to run a shorter rear bumper Simpson to eliminate upward facing surfaces in low pressure region of the car)

Where the guys are mounting there COT wings is much stronger and stuffer than you might think and also easily reinforceable to the frame rail with simple to make brackets and with the wing up reasonably high the trunk still works.

I think If I was going to mount it through the trunk lid I would mount it to the trunk lid then make a support structure from the under side of the trunk lid to the frame rails. Some form of quck disconnect or latch mechanism fastening the wing base to the support structure underneath would replace the trunk latch and or pins but I don’t have all the minute details of that pictured in my head yet.

The wings are in stock! NO MOUNTS
They are DIY so you'll have to come up with your own mounts. This small batch of wings only, is deeply discounted. Price will go up next batch mid summer.

Eventually we'll have frame rail mounts. The riveted bracket is on 31" center, same as frame rails.

Default dual element 2D APR GT-250 wing prototype

Prototype dual element wing at APR. This from APR's facebook page. I was asked to keep this mum a year ago but I guess it's ok to post now. This is why we have been working solely with the APR GT-250 2D wing. We knew this second element was on it's way. Now all we need is a motor to open that flap on the straights..

You're on the racing forum. Half of us don't even have windows. A little water in the trunk is the last thing we are worried about.

The miata has two plugs for draining water in the trunk. Its under your spare tire if you still have it in. You can always remove them to drain it out.

Duly noted. That's why I added a poll. I'd suggest a second trunk lid.

In any case, the decision has already been made. Moving the wing forward a bit and going through the trunk to the frame rails reduces it's leverage over the rear wheels by about 15%, stiffens the uprights, is better protected in a rear end hit, and most importantly, looks better.

It's not a high priority project right now so we shared pics of the protos we have floating around. Folks can buy the carbon 2D foil from APR and build their own. Hopefully we will have ours available to ship before next years race season. That will be an FRP version of the 2D with the proprietary adjustable frame rail mounts for a bit less than APR sells their trunk mount carbon 2D. It will have the option of a second element for those with big power, autocrossers, etc.

Has anyone considered bolting where the rear tiedowns are to mount the wing? I'd imagine the stress would be too high for the bolts but figured I'd ask.

no idea. As cool as it seems the market for cockpit adjustable aero is actually pretty modest. I'm sure there will be people out there coming up with their own systems. our focus is on club racing where it's not legal so I won't spend any energy on it myself.

You motorize it by making a heavy duty hinge where you want the stuff to pivot around and then using a pair of rods that goes inside the trunk to push and pull the sides you want to move up/down.
