Were you the meat in the sandwich? What did the other chick look like?

This would make for a better thread if there where more brands then just garret discussed in here, I would chime in but there are not actual maps for my turbo, only ones that some guy made himself.

At first I was thinking about asking about the "other" turbos out there but I figured there was even less actual experience for those other brands. Plus I am only a dealer for tial/garrett.

Default my questions - my build

Tim actually started this thread in response to my build and the conversations that followed.

I started my build with a 05 MSM that had already been modified a bit. I added a good suspension and took it to the track. Lap times were great but the v8 cars always pulled away entering the straits until I caught them with late braking in turn 1. It was obvious I need more low end grunt. I would enjoy a good bit of top end boost as well. I also needed a 3.63 gear. I really hate getting beaten my an insurance salesman in a stock z06, he just bought last week.

The spool time concerns me. Top end is easy. 300 h.p is enough, but I might get bored with that. 350 would be more fun, but not if I gave up driveability and transitions. I wont have a built bottom end for some time as I need to restock the $$$ before I can stroke etc, but it will happen. The head will be done before the turbo is bolted on.

Savingtons comments about the quick transitions hit home. Even a couple hundred RPM can be a huge deal in a transition. Having said that with some practice and a well "set-up" car I might be able to keep it spooled a little better than I think, or maybe not. I've got some seat time in everything from karts to Porsches. None had a turbo. With turbos so much depends upon tune, compressors maps, intake, flow and my ability to roll corners or keep the turbo spooled. Never had to deal with spool time before. Low end torque and big brakes are a bad drivers best friends. I will consider myself marginal until otherwise proven differently, so a few hundred RPM may be important to me. Big brakes are a given.

So, I here a sit pondering the universe and the differences in a 2871 vs a 3071, now drooling over a GTX. I love the conversations that are going on and genuinely appreciate the help that I have received, especially from Tim. I am learning a ton, but still cant see the deciding factor. Maybe I am just a slow learner.

How about this, 350 h.p, best possible torque at 3000 rpm, spooled by 3500 and bullet proof reliability. Not asking for much, huh?

I don't want to track a 350whp Miata without a cage; I don't feel too safe at 250whp in Mine. Do the GT2871.
