I don't doubt it. Having never towed besides 2-3 dirt bikes, I'm sure it is a stretch.

Its impossible in Utah with our 80 mph speed limits, but if I kick it down to 70-75 I get about 650 miles a tank(14.5 gallons), better if I drive slower. Helps not having any DPF or emissions on the car. Picked up almost 5 mpg that way. I'm sure mid 30s are realistic, it all depends on how happy my EGT is going up hills.

How badass would that be if you could manage to fit a Miata inside of it with some custom ramps out the back. Fuel would kill you though I'd imagine.

What could you save in hotels versus fuel? Idk.

I imagine it would make the difference profitable. I'll sleep in my car before I'll pay for a hotel though. Although, as I get older, my body disagrees with that cheapness.

If I don't sleep well then I have a bad weekend and that defeats the purpose. I have become too much of a prima Donna to sleep in the back of my own pickup truck anymore, lol.

Luckily sleeping in the back of my Jetta is no problem for me. I'm 5' 11" and with the seats folded flat I fit perfectly. Little more comfortable than a pickup. I have a shit load of "comfort" camping gear though. Add in a memory foam mattress topper and it is acceptable.

The new TDIs get insane hwy mpg by having tall hearing for low revs and low load. I predict high 20's towing even below 75 mph.

Towing my Volvo from Michigan to Utah on a tow dolly behind my old 1.9 TDI I got about 27 mpg. That was more weight, but those engines use less fuel when you're working them than the newer ones do.

True. My "dream" mpg car is a MK4 Jetta wagon. People get 50+ easy on those things with the right modifications. My problem isn't the car, it is my lead right foot. Driving the Miata has helped with that tremendously though. After driving the Miata spiritedly, there is just no point in driving the Jetta fast...since it isn't fast at all in comparison. Using cruise control everywhere helps with that a lot though.

The leading option right now is the biggest Edge Low Hauler. It's technically a bike trailer, but appears to have the capacity and space to haul the car, and it's 80" tall external and 64" inside, much better than ATC, which seems stuck at 57" inside height.

Yeah I wish I had a wagon, and I wish I had an ALH ('03 and earlier). Mine is an '04 and only gets 40 highway. Still awesome and a bit quieter and smoother than the ALH but not as efficient.

2500 cummins, 24' Trailer, truck gets anywhere from 10-13 mpg when hauling

I don't wish to tow with a sedan ever really. Its nice have the long wheelbase and higher weight for stability that you get from a truck/van/SUV.

Honestly, I don't mind paying the extra gas money for a bit more comfort in towing. When you tow 6 hours, its nice to be able to relax a bit while driving and not be a hawk-watching the trailer. Plus, I have a giant van and sleeping in it is really quite comfortable. Did I mention you get to do it with a trailer? not a dolly, which btw requires your car to be registered.

Yeah, a dolly is not ideal. Neither is towing with a sedan but I had no choice. There's a thread about that around here somewhere....

I mean I CAN, it just is like anywhere else. Long to get to sleep, sporadic wakefulness, and a too early ending.

I agree that the wagon is not ideal, but it is a cheaper and within budget solution to the occasional long distance hauls. Plus here in Utah/Nevada, we don't get crazy busy traffic or twisty roads. Our highways are smooth and pothole free.

I'm cheap and on a budget but this is the best $1,900 tow combo out there. 1991 F-150 with a 300/6 for $1,200 and a $700 tandem 16' trailer for $700. I get 14 to 15mpg on 87 gas towing if I keep it under 65. The truck has twin fuel tanks which give a range of around 500 miles which is cool too.

I've thought about getting a baller diesel but doing the math assuming a $.20 per gallon delta on fuel cost and 4mpg improvement in fuel economy, I would still need to tow well in excess of 100,000 miles to break even on a $10,000 diesel truck. Those calculations don't consider the difference in maintenance costs between my gasser and and diesel.
