Nope, not on my MY truck -- it's all pretty easy to work on (not that I've ever had to). It's the new Super Duties that require the cab to be lifted.

The 7.3 is fucking bulletproof. Don't give me that Duramax crap.

scottyd 07-07-2011 06:13 PM

Duramax? Gawd no. The only thing worse than one of those is a 6.5. Actually a 6.2.

I really need to get one of those.

Tire trailers are great because you look like such a poser when you show up to the track around the school of toter-homes with stackers. I usually feel like a man when I put the trailer on and go home after crushing a few $80k trailer queens.

MartinezA92 07-11-2011 10:52 AM

After finally getting tired of doing track days on street tires, I really want to pick up one of those ^

my friends 2003 didn't need cab removal to work on either. also it's in need of a rebuild, but apparently even hurt, they are indestructible. He's been towing everywhere for the last 1.5yrs. without issue. instead of rebuild or replace he's swapping in a cummins 12 valve.

Get a 98 12v with a 5 speed. The NV5600s are EXPENSIVE to fix. After tack welding the 5th gear nut on, the 5 speeds do great (unless you plan to tow 15k+ on a daily basis due to the 3rd-4th gear gap.

We've had 3-4 VP44's, one clutch, transmission rebuild, and a few front end rebuilds.

This is my first setup, 2007 Xterra with quick tilt trailer (custom)

Tire rack is different now with a stopper bar in front and a bar that goes inside the wheels to lock them up.

Anyone here ever use the 1500 conversion vans for towing? I`m looking for something to double as a cheap tow vehicle and I can sleep in it comfortably. I currently use my dakota as a DD and tow vehicle but using the tent in the middle of summer in GA etc. is getting old.

I`m debating buying a DD convertible (probably another miata), and then a conversion van for the towing. They seem like could be the ideal platform for what I am looking for if I built the suspension up a little bit to handle it. Hell, maybe I don`t need to. I would love to hear from some people which are doing this.

Why not a camper shell on the truck? You can graft an AC unit from an enclosed trailer/travel trailer on it. Then you just have to add a generator to the list of crap to drag around. Build a small "tent" structure after the camper to get a little more leg room.

I'm kind of thinking about doing something like that after a really shitty RV rental at Nationals this year. I'm tired of my sinuses trying to kill me at the end of the week.

It was def. debated for a while. This will also allow me to free up some more money to be able to buy a DD that is a little better than my truck. Ironically, the V8 dakotas get horrible gas mileage for a midsize truck. Very capable towing, but I usually get like 15ish driving normally in a city/freeway combination.

Here is how I return from the track after a bad (good?) day.

Couple of questions:

Is this setup below OK? I thought it was generally a bad idea to tow a car on a single axle trailer.

How heavy are most two axle open/flat car trailers?

I'm considering a trailer, but would want as light as possible since I'd be towing with a v6 Toyota 4runner.

It totally depends on the axle rating. 3500 pounds is a common axle weight rating, so if you can build a 1000 pound trailer body, you can put a 2200 pound Miata on it and have a bit of weight capacity to spare.

As I see it, the big downside to having a single axle trailer is that you have no tire redundancy, so a tire failure is more significant.

I always tow my miata here in France with this kind of single axle trailer, you need to really pay attention when you load the car on it, the car have to be well balanced on the trailer, if you feel the trailer moving from left to right when you go over 60mph you need to move the car more on the front of the trailer. But once you know were to put your car, it is ok.

I used to tow it with a Citroen break with only 140 hp but now I'm using a Volvo SUV to tow it without any problem.

A friend tows his Cayman S behind his Audi Allroad (the real C5 platform one - not the current faux one) on an aluminum two wheel trailer. It's all within specs for the Allroad. Looks very cool.

Unrelated: Does anyone use E-track plus these wheel straps to tie down their car?

https://www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Tra..._Tie_Down.aspx

I can't figure out if I can get away with just two of those + a backup tie down strap, or if I need four.

Holy Sh##

And you can drive this without any special driving licence ?
To tow something like this I would need the highest Truck driving licence here....

No special licence needed. Any trailer over 10,000lbs or truck/trailer combo weighing over 26,000lbs is on a "normal" license.

So I guess my tow rig might be a bit undersized?

I've been using the GTI to pull the empty trailer out of the side yard, I have an F150 for actual towing. I just thought this was an amusing sight.
