Default Wiring

What do you guys do for wiring? Homemade harnesses?

I've begun sorting my track car and I am totally sick of the wiring mess. I'm going to be using a MSPnP for mgmt and want to retain my turn signals, lights, windshield wipers, etc. so I can ditch a lot of the crap for the radio, A/C and stuff. What would the gurus recommend for a harness?

Don't touch it if you don't have to. I think you can get 30# or so from a wiring harness, but you're keeping half that. Unless you're in a competitive class, I don't think 15# is enough of a weight savings to justify the nasty sticky mess you'll have to go through to cut it out. Not to mention potential wiring gremlins if you cut something out you weren't supposed to. If you must cut it out, I take the easy way out: Cut it back as far back as possible, cutting the wires one at a time and at different lengths. Then use some e-tape to secure back onto the closest/main wiring bundle that you're not cutting out. Cutting them one at a time and at different lengths avoids shorts while cutting and afterwords.

Well that's just it, everything is removed and there are tons of loose wires and clips hanging around. I'm scared shitless of encountering a short and frying my MegaSquirt :$

The empty clips should be fine. Ziptie them out of the way and you'll be fine, it's safer than cutting into a harness. If you're REALLY scared, wrap them in electrical tape.

Agreed with curly on this one... Unless you are running an EMS that comes with it's own harness that you HAVE to wire in such as Motec or similar I wouldn't really bother.
