GI Bill pays my tuition, and gives me $2,000 a month to do as I please. Which is why I have $1,300 to blow each month. I don't have credit cards. I have no debt to speak of. You guys don't know me. I can live in an apartment for the rest of my life. I don't need a house.

If it has complex moving parts, involves precise tolerances / competent metallurgy, or is likely to take out something expensive if it fails, then I buy name brand. For simple stuff that can be made to function reliably by a 7 year old orphan working in a sweatshop in Laos, no need to spend the extra dough for fancy marketing.

Sidebar: saving money is cool. Seriously- keep a spreadsheet where each column is a month and each row is an account. Update it at the end of every month. It's a nice feeling every time you add another digit before the comma. (Or, after a certain point, each time the first digit increments.)

Once you reach a certain point, it's fun to start visualizing the number in the "total" cell in terms of which combination of very expensive things add up to that number. And if you ever get to a point where you think to yourself "**** it, I'm tired of this, I wanna just go out and buy a Lamborghini Gallardo," well, you can.

WPA is hit or miss. If they want your **** specifically it's just a matter of computing power. Same with wpa2. Most ppl will skip the wpa for the easy wep targets. I'm so surprised that so many people still use it.

I'll never feel the need to buy any car more expensive than $15,000 so why save? A car is the second biggest purchase next to a house. Besides, buying a new car is the most retarded thing anybody could do unless they can pay for it in full. Otherwise, why not just wait a year and save $5,000?

New catch can. You can see the pure skill and craftsmanship that went into it.

Ten bucks worth of PVC and hose.

Honestly, I'm surprised that so many people still leave their connections completely unprotected. There have been at least a dozen or so occasions in recent memory where I've been driving around somewhere and needed to get online. Just find an apartment complex and drive around for 30 seconds and you're practically guaranteed to find an open signal.

This is why most people with wpa will be safe for a while. Too many easy targets.

Probably... but impossible to enforce. You can spoof a mac address which is really the only thing I can think of that is identifiable and logged anywhere.

What law makes it illegal? Every iPhone, iTouch, iPad, Android, and laptop automatically searches for and connects to open networks. My phone uses connections unless I tell it not to.

1. A person commits the crime of tampering with computer users if he knowingly and without authorization or without reasonable grounds to believe that he has such authorization:

(1) Accesses or causes to be accessed any computer, computer system, or computer network;

Now you could argue that you didn't know you were accessing it, or didn't know you didn't have authorization... but it is illegal to access another persons network.

Irongeek is win, and just so happens to have an entire page with all state laws regarding hacking/computer security here:

yeah okay, let's say someone here says they steal internet, and then someone here reports them. Isn't a simple message on the internet reason enough to prosecute someone?
