Okay so the other day I was checking out this video of Bisimoto's new 700whp 1.6L SOHC Honda civic wagon.



This guy is famous in the honda world for his honda insight drag car that runs in the 9's with a N/A SOHC 2.2L.

But anyway, In the video he says that it has a full aluminum exhaust system. At which point I was like "wtf", I always thought that aluminum would fatigue at those temperatures. Im wondering if maybe its just aluminum from the DP back or something.

 

Its probably aluminum after the DP, which is of course lighter and lots of track rats are switching to alumunum exhaust. I've considered it.

I wonder how legal it is, I dont know what organization you normally run with but this sounds like something the SCCA would resist.

 

Aluminum Exhaust is very popular in the Honda world, especially drag racing. Normally it starts after the downpipe. My buddy actually had some prototype Aluminum Mufflers which a major company was designing. (He is their R&D Manager)

 

I have pics of a meth-burning twin turbo S-10 drag truck that has a fully aluminum exhaust, well, all 3 feet of it.

Columbia river mandrel has good pricing on aluminum tube. The welding cost for me is what would be prohibitive. Just to have a bung welded into my oil pan (I cut the hole) was $30. My exhaust shop can't do aluminum anyway.

I like where this thread is going... Exhaust heat being radiated from it will be a problem due to aluminum's not so high heat capacity. But nothing a little exhaust wrap can't fix...

 

A couple dsm guys around town have or had alum exhaust with custom alum mufflers, thought about it but have bigger fish to fry (that and I usually just run an open dp lol)

 

I'd rather put heat shield on the body. If it will save me 40lb, I'll pay for that.

 

I'd be interested in trying it out.

 

I am planning on using one on my car, but I am just looking at one from the DP back with a "flex section" test pipe to make up for the different rates of thermal expansion.

 

Jason made my mid pipe from aluminum, from after the "cat" section.* Much cheaper and side benefit of also being lighter.

*The downpipe is SS, the first section of the mid pipe is SS, which has a resonator impersonating a bullet cat. The resonator is band-clamped to the aluminum mid pipe. This won't cook the cabin and has no dissimilar expansion rates problems as far as I can tell.

 

I have the materials for my 3" after cat system just waiting for the day ,andall this time I thought I was going to shake the Miata world with my 3056 T-5 exhaust.Damn.

Why add the weight? Weight savings is the whole point. Thermal ceramic coatings FTW!
