So, i finally got off my lazy *** today and took apart the freebie VLSD i've had in the garage for the last 4 months. Guy i got it from said the pinion nut packed out on him and started making noise. Towed home and swapped. Looks like he was either going really fast when this happened or he was driving it like that for a while, but the diff carrier is carved up all the way around in the pattern of the pinion running on it. Really light scoring basically. I have complete confidence in running that diff carrier. Ring gear is surprisingly undamaged though. Gonna have my buddy who is a driveline specialist for Ford take a look at the pinion on Tuesday and get his professional opinion. Stubs and case are in excellent condition, and the seals dont need to be replaced, but i will anyway.

Hoping to get away with just replacing the pinion bearing, carrier bearings, all three seals, and maybe worse case scenario the pinion as well, and have a working unit to replace the open diff that is currently making noise between 42 and 48 mph.
