I recently bought my first Mx5 mk1 1.6 1993 as I have always been fond of these cars. I was aware before I bought the car of how easy they are to Turbo, obviously one of the many reasons I wanted to buy this car.

However, I was also very aware of the amount of turbo products available for this car and as like everything else, you can get your crappy parts, your great value for money parts and your very expensive, top of the range parts.

I have got a rough budget set in my mind but obviously I would like the best to come out of the modification. So I would just like to know the brands that I should stay away from and the brands that will give me great value for money without breaking the bank.

I'd also like to add that I live in a small group of islands between England and France called the Channel Islands so postage can sometimes be a problem for me but most businesses can usually work something out. So please keep that in mind when suggesting where to buy parts from. Thank you for your time and any replies would be gratefully received

You want a FM2 turbo system. You also want to buy their clutch, flywheel, and 3" exhaust. A 2554 turbo be preferable. The reason I say go this route is because you are on an island in Europe. You want everything you need, in one shipment the first time. Otherwise you will kill yourself on shipping charges.

 

What you actually want is a 1.8L-powered 94+

I'm in Australia and know that S&H charges add up significantly.

FM kits will include all the hardware you need so you wont be waiting for bits and pieces to arrive and you'll know that they'll be correct.

The ECU is something you need to consider though. I assume that you'll be tuning it yourself. If that's the case, you'd be better off purchasing a Megasquirt instead of FM's Hydra since that has the most online support available which will be important for you.
