6 speed question
I have been putting looking into this for a while but I should probably do something about it...chassis is a 90 and gearbox is from a 99.
How do you get the cable speedometer assembly into the 99 gearbox? Does it just go in and magically mesh/work? I was looking at the diameter of the gear that came out and it is significantly smaller than the cable speedometer units gear. I know the size of the actual assembly is the same but the difference in gear size is...troubling. Do I need to pull the guts for the speedo drive out of the 90 gearbox and put it into the 99 or just man up and push the cable speedometer unit in?

When I swapped in a 6 speed into my 94, the speedo gear just went right in. Basically you unbolt the 10mm(?) and pull the whole thing out from the 5 speed and then put it in the 6 speed.
yes, it's a 10mm bolt that holds the housing to the tranny. Unbolt that bolt from each tranny and pull the whole assy, the old assy will slide into the new tranny.
Aluminum housing is actually called the "gear locator" - you'll notice the housings on the two gears are slightly different, and that the smaller gear is held closer to the worm drive that it engages to compensate for the fact that it's smaller.
