Default Can you identify this diff ?

Hello guys,

I've bought a complete differential some weeks ago, the seller told me that it is a Torsen type 1. He showed me that it has big openings in the side gears to prove it.

Last Sunday I opened it to make a new seal before mounting it on my car and since then I'm worrying a but about my purchase.

The differential is clearly not a Torsen type 1 :

It looks like a Torsen type 2.

But it has big holes in the side gears like a type 1 :

Normally, the type 2 have this kind of holes in their side gears :

Have you ever seen a diff like mine ? Is it OEM or the seller has modified it ? Where are the central friction plates, washers and spring washers ?

Many thanks for your help !

Ummm, a Torsen doesn't have friction plates. It has gears. What can you see through those elongated holes - if it is gears it would seem to a torsen of some description. Have you asked the seller for more info?

Here is a pic from closer, we can see the worm gears.

Can you see the small bronze coloured part at the right side of the hole ? Is that normal ?

Dunno. I am not a diff expert and neither can I see around the corner in your photo.

What can you see through the slot? If you can see helical gears you have a torsen.

I've opened it because I was worried that the previous owner might have modified it.

At least, now I'm sure that it's in good shape.

As you can see, it's different from the other type 2 Torsen with the washers in the center.

We’re you the same guy I replied to on Facebook a while back?

The very late-production NA’s got these “type 1.5” torsens, with type 2 carriers but a different washer stack in the center. From my understanding they behave like a type 2. Enjoy!

Worm gear configuration is definitely like a type 2. probably behaves more like a type 2.
