Default FD3S RX7 transmission with OS Giken Gears?

I the search for High hp holding transmission options I had always wrote off theTII or FD3S because I thought I would hate the ultra wide ratios it comes with. I stumbled upon the fact that OSG now makes a close ratio gear set for it. Ratios would totally fix my dislikes of that option.

Anybody else looked at this? I'm now considering this and looking for what it takes fit this transmission.

Ratios are real close to the Wide ratio Quaife which I really liked for gearing. It just wasn't strong enough ether. This would work nice with a 4.44 or 4.30 rear end.

@fastivab6tg25mr is this similar to what you're running? (meaning the trans, not the OS GIKEN gearing)

I'm running a 89-94 b2600i truck trans on my FE3N. It's very similar to the FC T2 trans with slightly different internals that do not interchange. I was hoping they would cause the truck tranny does not speed shift at all.

Funny I have a Turboed Kia FE3 swap in my daily which is a 1990 B2200. I modified a 6 speed Miata trans to bolt up to it added a mount to the tail housing to mount on the stock truck trans mount and also moved the shift turret to the truck position. it works great.

The 6 speed doesn't hold up well in the 2.0l stroker Miata though and 6 speeds are expensive when you need a new one at least once a year.

Quick Time makes a bellhusing that replaces the stock RX7 bolts to the front of the transmission and one that bolts to a BP be nice if they made one that went BP to RX7. it would be way easy.

I like the wide ratios on my NB2 with the FD3S gearbox as it gives me back some traction. 1.9L VVT with GTX3076R at 30psi and currently with a 4.1 diff, in the process of switching back to the original 3.6 (originally a 6-speed Sport car).

It would be OK as is for street driving but would need at least a 3.909 to get second gear into autocross speed range. 1st is still for pulling stumps, third is too big of a jump, and redline in 5th would be way beyond any speed id get to even on the fastest road course tracks but it would get good fuel economy rolling down the highway. The OSG close ratio fixes the ratio problems. Id probably run a 4.44 with it. a couple places would be 4.30. I ran a 4.77 with the Quaife while it lasted. I broke it several times as well.

still curious what rout you went for mounting it in a Miata though.

Custom bellhousing. Basically we took the Miata BP bellhousing, the FD 13B bellhousing, cut each in half and welded them together. So the BP bellhousing fits on the engine side and the FD bellhousing fits on the gearbox. We also retained the PPF.

Interesting, that was an approach I was thinking. I did significant welding on a 6 speed to fit it to an FE3 but it had 2 bolts in the belhousing that started out in the correct spot so it actually bolted up correctly to begin with with just two bolts. also cut and welded on the tail housing to move the shift turret like 6" forward and add the features to make a trans mount in the same shape as the stock B2200 trans mount. So I have a B2200 pickup with a Turbo FE3 and a 6 speed transmission.

I also wondered about getting a bellhusing from a B2600I that comes with the G6 engine. I think based on swaps people have done and what I have done that the lower right side bolt to the block is actually in a common location and even aligns on the dowel sleeve. I think it would bolt up initially in the correct location with at least one bolt then need a bunch of holes moved similar to what I did on my 6 speed to FE3 B2200 truck swap.

Not finding many FD3S 5 speeds listed. Only one listed on car-part.com and its in Virginia. From what I understand you can take the bellhousing off and they can be boxed to ship UPS instead of Freight.

I don't know why Im so brain dead the OSG gearset says it is for the FC3S not the FD3S. I'm not sure what the internal differences are other than maybe a couple of the syncros.
