I just ran RS3's on 8" 6uls last weekend at the track and I will say that I am very impressed. Not sure how well they will take heat as it was in the 40's all weekend, but they did not go off during the 30 min sessions.
I have not seen the R1R so i have no direct comparison, but IIRC the R1R was designed more as an autox tire.

Everything I've read about the R1R says they are great new but lose traction and suck in the rain when they have some wear on them. Sucks there aren't more reviews of the RS3 out there yet. Everything I've seen is promising but not thorough enough.

R1Rs are very nice for street and autox. I've driven pretty darn fast in the rain. They do get pulled in standing water and are susceptible to hydroplaning...but you'd have to be pushing it. I'll add more info once they get to about 50% tread. Toyos in my experience do pretty darn well until you get near the bald tread depth. And you'd have to drive like an asshat or have something prone to spinning in the rain like an MR2 turbo, Miata, etc.
I still do and they work fine! Granted, when I "got on it", it did get squirrelly. I would like to see if the Hankooks would do better. If so, and I didn't autox, then I'd definitely consider the Hankooks. Otherwise, the R1Rs are a blast, predictable, and provide great grip.
I've posted this pic before but one more time would not hurt.
Wife driving the Auto-X car in heavy rain.

225/45/15 R1R's at full tread. Although they gatored from the begining they ended up lasting all season with about 140 runs on them. Very nice tire but they do oveheat with hot temps and seemed to work the best at around 40psi for me.
Also I took 2nd place in STS this season in DC area SCCA out of a very strong field in a car that should not be competetive.
I will be running a set of shaved Hankooks, shaved XS's next year and R1R's full tread for Rain tires.

i think that i will be using the 225/45/15 RS3's this upcoming season on my 8"6UL's. Probably will get them at the end of April. I predict that is when my t1r's will go bad.
i also plan on doing the Fredrick autox a lot this season since it is closest.
