So, driving around tuning fuel, gearbox goes boom.

For now I am dropping in a replacement 5-speed. Is there any difference in the early 1.6, early 1.8 of later 1.8 gearboxes?

Wasn't expecting it to blow this soon...

18psi 06-03-2010 02:16 PM

ouch..

No, and apparently there's no difference between the 5spds and a 6spd either, just an extra gear. You need to convert to an OEM transmission engineered and spec'd for the kind of torque you're putting down.

18psi 06-03-2010 02:20 PM

god damn it....and here I'm aiming for mid 300's very soon:facepalm:

regarding 6 speeds: I'm pretty sure they are capable of holding a bit more than the 5 sp, simply due to the fact that the gears are shorter and closer, as well as having a more rigid bellhousing allowing for less flex, and less torque load going from gear to gear. just my uneducated guess.

Laur3ns 06-03-2010 02:28 PM

I was in 3rd or 4th, can't remember actually.

Who is running the Quaife gearset? The wide ratio w/my 4.1 Torsen is tempting. But only if it will never break.

18psi 06-03-2010 02:29 PM

try it and see:D

Would you pay more to get a 15.000mi NB 5spd over any old 100.000m NA box?

Yes, NB 5 speeds shift soooo much smoother than NA 5 speeds.

What's the write-up for this R&R?
- Drain gearbox
- Remove speedo cable and wiring clips
- Unbolt PPF and move it to the side
- Unbolt drive shaft and move aside
- Tilt engine slightly backwards
- Unbolt range of 14 and 17mm bolts, including starter
- Remove?

Missing something?

fooger03 06-03-2010 03:17 PM

Big exhaust? Unbolt downpipe and remove.

My 6-spd wont come out with the 3" downpipe in place.

Just lifting the car off the ground ;)

18psi 06-03-2010 03:27 PM

taking it out is cake. aligning the input shaft when putting it back on is a bitch.

Laur3ns 06-03-2010 03:27 PM

- Lift car up HIGH
- Remove shifter as a whole
- Remove cat back
- Drain gearbox
- Remove speedo cable and wiring clips
- Unbolt PPF and move it to the side
- Unbolt drive shaft and move aside
- Tilt engine slightly backwards
- Unbolt range of 14 and 17mm bolts, including starter

18psi 06-03-2010 03:28 PM

disconnect shifter

Quaife sucks because I bought a $900 differential from them, had a pro install it for $500...then one of the first times I ran the car on the freeway in 4th gear at 480whp the diff's case broke. I called quaife and those ******s told me they would only warranty the internal gears, not the case and they'd sell me another one at a reduced priced.

I told them to eat my shit on toast and Gary Peloquin chimed in and cut me a deal on his differentaial that was fine in my car and my friend's 900whp car. I wish he'd made differentials for us...time for me to call.

It will be a cold day in hell before I give Quaife a god damn red cent.

Peloquin > Quaife. I have never heard one bad thing about Peloquin and they are cheaper with a better warranty!

Peloquin offers a "no questions asked" warranty and apparently no one has ever broken one. I want him to make diffs for us but not sure if the planetary diff works as well as a clutch diff.

chicksdigmiatas 06-03-2010 08:55 PM

Toasted gearboxes are never fun. My secondary shaft broke in half on my first kill.
