No, and apparently there's no difference between the 5spds and a 6spd either, just an extra gear. You need to convert to an OEM transmission engineered and spec'd for the kind of torque you're putting down.
I don’t know for sure why but the 6 speed in my mind is proven to be stronger. I have broken seven 5 speeds with 3 different failure modes trying to put more than 350 hp through them. The 6 speed has lasted 10 times longer so far. Oh, and there is actually 3 differences in the 5 speeds but none of the changes really effects strengh or function much. they upgraded a syncro once in the series and later changed the shift turrnet on the 5 speeds over the years. Put my name on a 2000 NB 5-speed box with 15.000mi.

So, the old gear salad bowl is out. I'd better remove the downpipe too when I get the new box in. Took about 3 hours working on my own. Not too bad. The fact that the car has been apart before helps.
I can't see how I would get a new box in by myself and as I've lots of other (real) work to do, I'm going to have it done. |
Its not to bad, paying a buddy in beer to help you wiggle the input shaft back in would be a wise investment.

If you're doing it yourself seriously consider using rope through the shifter area to keep the tail end of the trans up so all you have to do is handle the bellhousing area. Always makes putting it back in worlds easier for me.
