1: Prevent crankshaft from rotating.
2: Insert appropriately-sized socket onto breaker bar.
3: Apply socket to bolt.
4: Apply force to handle of breaker bar so as to rotate bolt counter-clockwise as viewed from front of car.
#1 can be accomplished by putting the transmission into 4th gear and fully applying the brake. If your car has an automatic transmission (which you didn't specify) then you'll need a special tool to hold the crank in place, such as this: Flyin' Miata : Miscellaneous : Tools : Flyin` Miata crank bolt tool/crank holder (You can also make this yourself from a piece of scrap steel or angle-iron which you have lying around.)

I'd go for the Rennmetal tool just because it works for both woman engines and man engines, and short nose crank cars as well.

Visions of my breaker bar snapping at the hinge and flying across the garage have prevented me from ever trying it. 4th gear and brakes have always worked for me.
With how cheap electric impact guns are these days... Thats how I've always zipped it off. It goes back in with a torque wrench, 4th gear, and someone standing on the brakes though.
You'll pop a blood vessel before you put enough torque to turn the motor if you were to have the hand brake on on top gear so no no one needed to stand on the brakes.
