AMSOIL or Redline CV2 seems to be the consensus around here.

In fact, EO2k has a pic of the AMSOIL grease in his hub rebuild thread.

The local parts store had Redline in stock, so Redline was used on my shafts.
Smooth and slippery.

Added bonus? It's red.

Amsoil Dominator aka Amsoil 2000 is what I used.
AMSOIL DOMINATOR Synthetic Racing Grease

AMSOIL Dominator grease is significantly better than CV2.

EO2K 12-04-2013 01:43 PM

Seriously.

I'm going to start putting it in my coffee in an effort to stay regular.

compaddict 12-04-2013 01:58 PM

I'm trying NEO racing grease front and rear. Expensive, but many in the racing community swear by it. Much thicker than Redline CV.

Impuls 12-04-2013 09:14 PM

Order from Amsoil? or where
Also did things change for the NB front hubs?
My posts computer is giving me 30mm nut with a 18x1.5 or a 20x1.5 nuts

Why do you think it's better. The CV2 held up in the CV joints on 1000hp/800+lb-ft Can Am cars with 16" wide slicks at VP, seems like a decent test to me.

Maybe not as good in ball bearings as CV's?

Order it from Andrew. Send him a PM and he can invoice you via Paypal, that's what I did anyway.

No clue about your nuts, but mine required a 29mm socket to R&R (I also picked up a 32mm to do the rears.) I sourced my replacement nuts from Rosenthal as there was some scuttlebutt about FLAPS/RockAuto computers having the wrong size listed, and some question as to the quality of "generic" replacements. Having said that, I replaced mine out of OCD, not necessarily because they needed to be replaced. I was already placing an order, so I just tossed them in there.

Because he sells it? :giggle: IDFK, I used it because Trey and Andrew said it works. If it can keep Trey's china eBay hubs alive it should be just fine on my Timkens. I couldn't get either locally (the neighborhood AMSOIL guy out here is a bag of rancid dicks) and I was already buying magic juice for my 6 speed, so again I just added it to the order. The SpecMiata guys really seem to like the CV2, I think either would work just fine in the long run.

Where does horsepower come anywhere close the the equation of hub grease?
Also can am is Canada yes? It's probably bacon grease they're using.

5X Racing Hardcore Miata Front Hubs

So their 375 per hub top of the line hubs have ceramic balls. Do you think they are spraying ceramic coating on the races too? $375 a hub sucks balls :)

Leafy 12-06-2013 02:13 PM

Sounds like their top end hubs get the races sent out for DFL coating. Not sure how I feel about that.

compaddict 12-06-2013 03:03 PM

That's bad ass!

z31maniac 12-06-2013 03:27 PM

I'd consider them if there was some type of assurance they would last.

After my experience with the ART, Karl not emailing me back, it's going to be hard not to just buy bulk OEM hubs and always have a few spares with me.

soviet 12-06-2013 04:04 PM

I doubt they are coated.
Silicon nitride - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

edit: misread; they are coating the RACES. the bearings themselves are definitely ceramic.

Leafy 12-06-2013 04:06 PM

races treated using a proprietary procedure for greaseless operation

That sounds like DFL coating to me.

The amount of power you're putting through a CV has a lot to do with its longevity which is why I mentioned it. It also makes a difference on the rear bearings. Fronts obviously are loaded by other forces (in Miatas). My point was CV2 works great in highly loaded parts with ball bearings in them, what makes the Amsoil better. Legit question IMO.

And "Can-Am" was the "Canadian-American Challenge"... the cars I worked on were from its first iteration 1966 to 1974. The 1000hp car in question that we restored and did trackside support on was a '74 Shadow DN4 (the car that won the championship in '74). 510ci BBC putting out (now) 1014hp normally aspirated.

Closest thing we've seen in "modern times" to a run what you brung series. I've been reading up on this series lately and it seems amazing.

circuitmstr74 12-12-2013 01:13 AM

John at 5xracing built my hubs to order with high grade ceramic coated balls and proprietary grease. They are butter. Not real butter, but the "ic ant believe its not butter" shit thats even better than real butter.
Shoot him an email, he can build you whatever you like and give you a discount probably if you run his stickers etc.
I get a different deal because we are buds but you get the picture...

I've seen a few guys cook it in the front bearings. Amsoil holds up better to the heat. JKav uses a Mobil(?) grease that's got similar properties to Amsoil. IIRC he said they tried CV2 and cooked it as well.
