Sav,

Did you have a mazda shop fix your trans? It's looking like my cheap six speed gamble isn't paying off. It pops out of gear when I let off the gas under load. I can manage around town, but it means HPDEs are out of the question. Is this something that any competent shop can handle? Should I bring them a copy of my 6 speed shop manual?

Any advice on tackling this fix would be appreciated.

My experience with transmission rebuilding tells me to buy a press and pullers to do the work myself.

rebuilding these things has been on my list of must-learns for a while. i've got a press, pullers, 12" digital caliper, and an unlimited supply of beer for anybody who would be willing to show me how to open/close one.

Anyone have any data on how hot these transmissions run?

I had a normal shop do the work. It turned out fine as far as I can tell. I didn't replace much, just reverse gear and the 5/R shift fork.

A tranny cooler has been on my long todo list for a while now. Might be something I look into more closely now.

Jason, what clutch are you using in your car?

I believe we saw 240*f on Matt Andrew's car at Big Willow in 101* heat
. I'll slap a thermax sticker on my trans case for next weekend.

I just talked to John and he said that the thermax sticker did not go over ambient like 100*f. I don't know if I believe that (sticker malfunction) so I'm going to test mine next weekend.

What would you do?

Put low mileage mystery 6-speed in the car? $600-$800

Sell my usable but obviously in need of help 6-speed ~ -$300

Just put money into current 6 speed and know that it's good ~ ?????? +$400 I have in it.

Anyone happen to put a caliper on the shifter ball? I'm trying to determine what year 6-speed shifter I have.

I have a theory that 6-pucks are harsher on transmissions than full-face discs. You lost your tranny on a shift, just like TSB and I both did - we both had 6-pucks as well.

My hope is that my 949twin is smoother on the tranny.

I have an ACT sprung 6 puck 1.6L size with an extreme pressure plate. It is way smoother than the spec clutch I tried.

I think the tranny noise I was getting was from the sprung disk the metal springs are smashed and loosely rattle around now when I inspected it. I’m wondering if a non sprung hub would be better just because there would be less slop. I suspect the torque level is just overwhelming those springs to the point they are not really absorbing shock but amplifying it sort of like a slide hammer. especially on my 1.6 size disk.

I wish stuff would stop braking on me so I could afford to buy some more cool bits.

Buy the mystery 6-er and use an FM clutch (I want one, bad). I have a few 6-speeds in the garage but no calipers...if some calipers find their way into my garage I'll measure for you.
