One thing I looked up again. If you look at the wheel clearance envelopes for the different brake kits in the PDF’s on the willwood site.

An 11.75” Dynalite kit requires 13.96” Id on the wheel by the caliper to clear.

An 11.75” Radial mount Dynapro kit requires only 13.44” Id on the wheel to clear.

I know there are some wheels that will clear the Dynapro and not the Dynalite when used with an 11.75” rotor. Kosi K1’s I know for sure. I wedged a bolt kicked up off the track at Laguna between the caliper and rim and nearly sawed a 949 wheel in two so I know it is tight. I am now thinking the Dynalight will be dam tight compared to my Radial Dynapro setup.

The Radial Dynapro calipers fit tighter to the rotor in the radial direction allowing bigger rotors to be stuffed in smaller wheels. They are likely to have less spoke clearance because they use thicker pads though.

Read this on m.net, saw how there's only 6mm of clearance to the spokes of a 6UL.

Has anyone contacted Emillio about the deflection his models had when subjected to forces? I'm not saying the spokes do or don't deflect 6mm, but I'd think it'd be topical to clearance issues such as this.

Actually... I'll send him an email, see what he thinks.

It's not looking good for my 1st gen 6UL's...

Nagase 12-15-2010 02:04 AM

Got a response back, apparently he's up yet... 4mm of clearance to brake components. Easy info.

I'm going to mail you a set of 12.19" rotors and a bulletcam so we can all watch the nervous breakdown you have when it doesnt clear your 15x9s. :hustler:

Edit: radial mount caliper discussion has been moved to another thread as per sav's request, I think I got everything.

Well after that tid-bit, do we need to know who's still in for the lug mount brackets? I am still gtg. I have a set of K1s and will likely go with the dynapros - they're also on 20mm spacers which may/maynot buy me some clearance.

My assumption is that anyone on the list in the first post is still looking to purchase the kit discussed in the first post.

I have a set of et36 K1's with 20mm spacers on my car right now It will be very close. 20 mm isn’t enough to get my caliper away from the drop section on the wheel with the Dynapro radials that I have but they fit because the calipers fit in a smaller radial space. The other calipers take up more room in the radial direction but are a bit narrower so it might just clear as the corner of the caliper has a radius to it that might end up on the sloped part of the drop as long as you are using thick wheel spacers.

But then again I don't know which hats Savignton is using they could have a different offset. The Mini hats have about as much offset pushing the rotors towards the knuckle as will work without hitting the tie rod ends. I think there was about 3mm clearance there. If the mini hats had Miata center bore size they would be perfect.

Sav I may be jumping ship here to the radial setup. I think that is what I really want.

Sorry Savington for creating such a train wreck here. I’m just trying to freely give information not harm business.

I'm sure he's not butt-burt, he's been around here too long for it to hurt anymore :) Me on the other hand - I tremble in the presence of the Miata Gods

What's the time-line looking like should you feel we have enough people (with $$), Sav?

Ideally, late January. We definitely have enough people. :)

I have no problem with info, Bob. :) I'm deadset on the Dynalites because I already own a set, as do 80% of the people in the group buy - it started as a pet project for my car, and it evolved into an upgrade for our current 11" kit, or any other kit with Dynalites - I never intended to sell it as a standalone kit, just as an upgrade.

It would take me a long time to make up the cost of radial Dynapros ($400) in pad life (50% pad life increase = $30 discount per set, 13 sets of pads, 5 track days a set, 60 track days), so I'm just not interested in switching calipers at this point.

OK good, glad I'm not causing a hassle.

GeneSplicer 12-17-2010 05:42 PM

THAT would be perfect timing as track days start picking up around march... Just let us know when you need the funds!

paNX2K&SE-R 12-18-2010 10:54 PM

I'm interested.

The 11.75x.81 size rotor 'babk' has been used on the fwd sr20 cars for almost a decade with great success. There is a proven list of wheels that fit which might be a good starting point for the miata fitment with the same brake setup. Here it is:

11.75" List
Team Dynamics Pro Race 1 15x7 +30
Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 15x7 +30 and +35
Volk TE37 15x7 +35
ATS Comp Lite 15x7 +35
949 Racing 6UL 15x8 +36 with a 5 mm spacer

11.00" List
Rota C8
Rota Grid
Rota Subzero
Kosei K1
949 Racing 6UL 15x8 +36
Enkei RP02 15x7 +35

Black flag list (those already tried and guaranteed to not fit)
Enkei RPF1 15x7 +35
Rota Slipstream 15x6.5 +40
Rota GT3 15x7 +40
Rota AutoX 15x6.5 +40
Rota RB 15x8 +35 (probably the 15X7 too)

Bob.

Guys, please keep any discussion of the radial-mount calipers in the other thread. I don't want people reading this thread to get confused about wheel clearance or other issues. I will have a rotor/hat next week and I will check wheel fitment on several different wheels then, but until that happens any discussion of wheel clearance is just guesswork.

Can a mod please move all of the radial mout discussion to the radial mount thread? Thank you.

Savington 12-21-2010 06:07 PM

Update, R&D rotor arrived today. 15x9 +36 6UL clearance confirmed with SIGNIFICANTLY more spoke clearance than our old Corrado setup. Bolting up to a 15x8 +36 in a moment.

e: 15x8 +36 clearance confirmed. 15x8 +40 guys, it's going to be really tight. Plenty of spoke clearance but the bell of the wheel will be very close to the caliper, too close for my comfort. It's probably possible but I'd prefer to see a ~4mm spacer being used. I will try and get a real +40 wheel in my hands to check clearance.
