No, they just order it from Tire Rack and eat the shipping cost. Get to know your local Discount Tire manager, chances are he's an IRL cool dude.

I eventually ended up using it later for tires on my relative's car (at a remote location), just to get rid of it. When calling different stores locally, I did find the reception for the idea was mixed. Some were obviously much more willing (hungrier) than others.
I mean if they matched plus 15% off I'd bother trying. Now i'll just wait for them to arrive, them take them over to the used tire dealer down the street from me and pay $15 each to get them mounted and balanced.

plus there's not many local stores that sell Contenital tires around here, maybe Sears.

OK, that makes a lot more sense then. Too bad though, it would have been nice for there to be some competition in pricing on them.

Yeah, I don't think you'd ever see that happening. I doubt their margins are big enough for that.

I'm guessing you were unable to use the Discount Tire coupon being discussed in this thread?

No, but I was responding to somebody complaining that DTD doesn't have stuff and some fuckery between DTD and DT.

Tangentially.. on topic. :v

I guess I don't see what's in this for DT ? If they are just ordering the tires through TR (like you could do yourself), but then eating the shipping costs, where are they making their profit on the deal; on the installation alone? Plus, wouldn't they then have to charge you tax given that the tires are essentially being sold to you locally? Maybe a pic of your receipt would show how they did it.

So instead of paying $57 for shipping, I paid $35 in tax.

Interesting.
I just looked on TR and they're offering a $50 rebate on any set of BFG's. I'm guessing you did not get that, seeing as how they were technically the purchaser of those tires, but I wonder if that could be what's paying for the shipping in this case.

Otherwise, since you payed the tax and an environmental fee which isn't charged by TR, it looks like if I bought a set of these directly from TR, got my rebate, took them in myself (or shipped them direct to store) and payed the mount/balance/disposal/valve fees, I'd still be about $16 better than that invoice total (including the rebate).

Now, if they were kind enough to give you that rebate, then that's an awesome deal and, again, I can't see where they're making any money other than a tiny bit on installation.

It's $50 fun bucks (still money, but it's a Mastercard) that takes 2 weeks in the mail after you fill out the rebate. Being down $16 for a lazy/idiot tax seems pretty reasonable seeing how I didn't have to mess around with trying to fit 4 225 wide tires into the car while it was sleeting.

Also the $16 mounting/balancing is for tires that you buy from Discount Tire. I think if you bring your own tires, it's a bit more expensive.
