Why not just run Rival-S?

i like to keep one manufature on the car at a time. but that's just my OCD. if the maxxis is that much slower then i will buck up and buy the rival S.

How is the 245/40 fitment on an NA? I'm assuming a flat roll + pull will be in order.

This is perfect timing, we will be doing testing on our J35 swap early '16 and these could be a definite game changer at 250whp

Heavy pull front & rear. NB only needs the flat roll. Don't bother running these unless you are putting them on 10's Putting them on 8's as the other fellow suggested would be a waste of their potential and guaranteed slower than 225/45's on 15x9.

I also misunderstood the question, and did not realize he specifically meant the fitment of the VR-1s. Furthermore in my morning haze I saw 225 so disregard my previous post completely.

I wonder if these 245/40 would be faster on a 15x9 than a 225/45... of course it would have to be a different compound unless they plan on making a 225 tire as well.

i have the rc-1 245 on a 9" wide wheel. it has a slight stretch to it.

I was actually referring to slammed200's post. 245 on 9's looks pretty good.

Those in your pic are the discontinued prototype 245/40's. The current production 245/40/15 RC-1 is wider and hangs over the side of a 9" wheel. I'm the idiot responsible for the change in spec so I'm quite familiar with the two :)

In either case, 245/40 RC-1's (anything produced in 2015 or later) are fastest on 10's.

i bought them September 14th. 4 months ago. almost a year after they where released. they must have made a crap load of prototypes for them to still be shipping a year later. i have 2 on contingency headed my way. i'll let you know if they get any bigger.

I have a tiny roll on the fenders and the wheels don't rub. 1999 NB chassis.

edit: that's BS if they got bigger and i ordered these not that long ago :(

I had bought some tires in late '14 that were marked x513 (can't remember the first digit) on the date stamp, then won some contingency and when they got here in the summer of 15, they were marked the same date as my original purchase. Then after the summer break I finally got a '15 date shipment.

Wouldn't surprise me if there were a plethora of prototype tires that were sent to you.


fwiw, I'm still waiting on 4 events worth of tires to ship from MAXXIS. Apparently they got backed up for X reason according to NASA and MAXXIS.

OK i got word, and we should stop beating the dead horse. to resolve, i called maxxis last night. the rc-1 tires i have are the current production tires. they told me they sold out of the prototypes early 2015.

They also said the Vr-1 are placing near the top of other competition 200 tread tires. but they do have a lot of "meat" to them. if you where serious about competitive auto crossing, shaving would be advised. with maxxis's longevity and the thicker thread, I think these are going to find a real home in lemons/chump racing.

Are the rivals significantly faster than the RC-1 same size compared or just slightly. What do you attribute this to? I'm on a rc1 245 now but was going to go to a 10 vs a 9 like it is now. Maybe it's worth it to stick to the 9 if there's stickier tire choices?

i was running 205 SM7 Hoosier. spec miata take offs. had 7 heat cycles, less then a year old, mounted on a 15x8. lasted 2 events before they corded. i pulled 1.3G peak on those at road Atlanta.

i replaced them with a 245/40r15 RC-1 on a 15x9. At the same December event at road Atlanta i had 1.4G peak. that was with 6-8 heat cycles (4 events). today the maxxis still has the "maxxis" logo in the middle of the tread. these things are going to last forever.

The longevity I like, I hear that's what the RC-1 is kind of known for. I like the numbers in your comparison but makes me wonder how badly even a 225 Hoosier would beat the RC-1 245/40. I've got decent meat on my maxxis so if they hold me over till the VR-1 comes out and gets some testing, I may make the change. I guess the grip/wear is a ratio that can't be changed much ie you can't have a super sticky tire that lasts long too.

a 225 Hoosier is the same size as a maxxis 245. The maxxis is a 100qutg tire. so the hoosire is going to crush it, and everything else in the same size. i'm not looking at hoosires because you need to use them for competition and that's it. once you put 5 heat cycles in them they will start to fall off. so if you take them to a 2-day "track day". you can run 10 heat cycles and heat cycle them out. for a set of tires that costs over a $G that's not to appealing to me. i do 15-20 events a year and the fact the maxxis holds on for so long really lowers my operating costs.
