Default Emissions testing isn't just a California problem.

I was just thinking about the old Link Piggy manifold. The one with the extra injector bungs welded in, and the flimsily-mounted fuel rail that usually didn't spray fuel everywhere and set your car on fire.

Fm had a few for sale as their deal of the day but I don't see that anymore on their site. Might want to call them and ask.

Horray google. They had more at one point. The one for your car was last listed a few days ago.

Flyin' Miata : Turbodog's deal of the day!

Joe,
With your electrical skills, and megasquirt building/developing experience, I'm shocked you're even considering something like this.

Build a MS3 or MSPro piggy or parallel install, and be a boss. Just my .02

This guy

The pieces of U-channel were my Home Depot Racing aux-injector delete after I got a real ECU and real (well, semi-real, they were RC 550s) injectors.

The tabs broke off on my fuel rail, but it never sprayed fuel on me. Used it for 5 or 6 years.

Yeah, that one.

Shame nobody makes a modern-day version of that. One with a more robust injector-and-rail solution.

Would you run staged, or have stock ECU run the stock inj for testing and a MS run a second, full size set?

Why couldn't some of the great fabricators on this site be able to modify a manifold for you that could utilize a stock rail?

This is what I have on my new (to me) NB.

The whole kit and caboodle will be for sale in the near future. Link piggyback FMII kit that is.

What about putting in larger injectors and the having a swith-able AFPR in parallel with the stock 60 psi one in the tank. Then, when going back to to the stock ECU, you would run the larger inj at lower pressure. Sure pattern would be bad, but if the ECU could make them work, it would be simpler than changing or adding injectors.

Simpler than changing injectors? It takes 15 minutes tops.
But even if Joe doesn't want to bother with that, I'm still curious why a parallel or piggyback install wouldn't work. Have the MS control fuel and timing and the stock ecu everything else. As long as you can mimick the stock ecu settings, and Joe has before iirc, and even got a car to pass with ms iirc (or was that y8s?). I mean if it was some n00b it would make sense, but Joe knows his MS and knows his electronics. I'm sure he could make it happen.

I'd love to see a parallel/piggy-back install with a newer MS, It'd give me every more reason to trash this XEDE already

I passed sniff emissions turbocharged running MS1, MS2, and MS3 on shitty rx7 460cc injectors and a high flow cat.

Ben and y8s both had MS3 piggybacks on their NBs at one point.

As have I.

In California, no less.

Several times.

But with a pre-1996 vehicle.

Your anecdotal experience is invalid. (Imagine a pony image here.)

I have been told, by people whose opinions I value, that trying to keep an NB ECU happy in a parallel environment, in which it is not in control of the primary injectors, is difficult bordering on futile.

You'll be getting CELs, yes.

Also, forget what a happy idle is once you hand over the ignition control to the MS. The stock ECUs uses it for fine idle control and unless the MS controls the idle valve (another CEL there) you can expect idle oscillations.

That's my experience on my 2002 with a parallel MS1 setup.

So difficult to be lazy!

It'd be nice to know what feedback the OEM ecu is expecting when it is adjusting & making changes. Wishful thinking... Any electrical engineers know if it'd be possible to fool the oem with a Pi board?

There is already a thread about passing OBDII with an MS3 in parallel.

It ended with success and rethinking life under the influence if many stiff drinks. The experiment was discontinued due to intervention from ethical watchdogs from the future who came back in time to tell me to stop pursuing intellectual dead ends for the sake of convenience.

Anyway, the piggyback is a cool concept and with the proper rear mount turbo, could be a real stealth option.

However I still stand by my challenge to you of a mechanical computer fuel injection system. I suspect anyone who attempts to evaluate this vehicle will pass you out of sheer awe.
